Chapter 5

"I'll walk you home, it's dark."

From your posted position on the couch you looked up and saw Noctis standing in front of you, having his usual monotone facial expression on his face. However when the two of you locked eyes, his expression gentled as he allowed a closed smile. Without causing a scene, you nodded in agreement, saying goodbye to everyone and throwing on your shoes. After today, you decided to tear down the wall around your heart a bit, even if it was only a few inches. Noctis walked closely by your side, his hands in his pockets and his eyes wandering upwards towards the stars.

"Have you ever been stargazing?" He suddenly asked.

You followed his example and looked up. "I used to go to the park with-" You caught yourself, clearing your throat and suddenly looked towards your feet. "A-A few times. It's really nice."

Noctis noticed your words, but refused to acknowledge it. "They're harder to see from here because of the light pollution, but we could go to the towns park sometime and take a look. There's a really good spot on a nearby hill."

Your gaze continued to stare down at your feet. Your mother used to take you stargazing, pointing out all the constellations and planets if they could be seen that day. You would grab your favorite drink and sit out on a park bench, staring up and listening to your mother ramble about astronomy. You lifted your eyes upwards again, your attention going towards the sky once more. You wondered if she was up there, watching over you. If she was, you hoped she turned away at the gruesome parts.

"That sounds nice." You admitted quietly.

You felt Noctis' eyes dart in your direction, a soft wind blowing his hair. He lifted an arm and draped it over your shoulders, pulling you close to him as you approached your home. Did he know too? Did Vanitas or Sora say anything to him?

Just before you reached your front door, Noctis embraced you tightly. He leaned down ever so slightly so he could whisper in your ear'

"If you ever need anything, anything at all, please don't hesitate to reach out."

As he released you, he pulled out his phone and demanded your number. You felt your face grow hot as you gave it to him, and he ensured to send out a text quick before waving goodbye. You watched him wistfully as he walked away, and you felt a sudden painful emotion swell inside your chest. You weren't ready to go back inside your home, but you knew Rufus was waiting. You slowly pushed open the door, peeking inside to certify that he wasn't waiting right at the entrance. When you confirmed, you walked in and quickly made your way up the stairs to your room, where you shut and locked the door behind you. You pulled out your phone and saw the text from Noctis, that being a black dog emoji. You smiled to yourself, clicking on the other notification as someone else had texted you. Your smile was short lived when you realized it was Rufus, informing you he would be working late today. You took no time to quickly delete his text so you could pretend he didn't exist for at least one night. However that was unrealistic as that man haunted your thoughts as you prepared for bed, going about your normal nightly routine. 

You couldn't help but worry about him showing up at any minute, just bursting down the door like he used to. There were a lot of things he did to you that was not in the legal reports, things you never talked about with anyone. He used to be a raging alcoholic, and him getting drunk would result in a beating or even-

You shook your head vigorously.

You missed mom so much. She was your rock, and right now you felt as if you had nobody. You were alone. Your anxiety smothered the air in your lungs as you felt yourself hyperventilating. You didn't want to be a burden to anyone, but at this moment you didn't feel safe. You couldn't breath. You couldn't stop overthinking. The flashbacks in your head continued to occur in a blink. With a shaking hand you lifted your phone to your face, staring at two of the four contacts in your phone.
