chapter 4

(Demi's pov)
I woke up. my vision was blurry at first. was I dead? all i saw was a white ceiling. i sat up. Selena was sitting there with nick. "oh good you're up." she said.

"I'll go get a nurse" nick said walking out.

"where's joe?" I asked. "and Brooklyn. where's Brooklyn?" I asked.

"joes fine. he went to the cafeteria to get us some coffee. he was a little nervous. Brooklyn is in surgery." she said looking down.

"what happened?" I asked and started to cry. the thought of my baby girl being hurt tore me apart.

"you got into a car accident about 4 hours ago. joe was fine, just some scratches. you're okay too. they think it's just a concussion. they couldn't be sure until you woke up though. brooklyns having some-" she stopped.

"tell me." I snapped.

"heart failure. the whole back seat of your car is tore up. even an inch closer and the semi could've went right through her. they're trying to get her heart and lungs working at the same pace again. but her little body is too young to cooperate. she should be out anytime." Selena said hugging me.

a nurse in purple scrubs with Dora the explorer on them walked on. "hello mrs. Jonas." she said smiling.

that was all she said. she quickly took my blood pressure, listened to my heart beat, and replaced my IV.

as she walked out, joe walked in.

"hey sweetie" he said rushing over to me. I scooted over so he'd lay with me. I just really love him so much and want him to hold me.

i can hardly ever stand to even see my baby girl scrape her knees, and now her heart isn't working correctly? unfortunately, this is the downside of being a parent. worry.

joe stroked my hair and apologized. "Demi, I'm so sorry. I just missed my turn. I didn't mean to hurt-"

"shh." I interrupted. "don't say anything, just hold me."

and he did. his mouth closed, his arms opened. the doctor walked in the room. "mr. and mrs. Jonas. Brooklyn is out of surgery and in recovery. you can see her in about an hour. everything seems to has gone well so far, we're going to keep her for a couple days for observation." he said. "do you guys have any questions?"

"yeah, what exactly did you do to her?" I asked.

"we went in; and put a stent in her heart. anything else?"

we shook our heads.

"great, now," he looked at Selena and nick. "could you excuse us?" he asked them.

this made my stomach flip flop as they walked out of the room.

"I wanted to talk to you about something I noticed about her. the last checkup she had she weighed 57 pounds, pretty normal for her age. & just this past year she's lost half of that. she's at 35. I noticed she turns down food, she likes to be hyper. I'm afraid this type of weight loss may be the reason she's having heart failure.

when she gets in stressed or traumatic situations, such as this wreck, it triggers her heart to shut down. I fear she may have a hereditary eating disorder." he said looking at me.

my heart sank. I did this too my baby. because my mom used to call me fat?

"why are we just now finding out? she's always been smaller for her age, but the doctors have never said anything. she has checkups every year?" joe asked confused.

"well like I said, it only gets triggered through distress. and I figure at her age, there isn't much a 4 year old has to stress about. but this wreck caused her stress. fear. something there. it will only get worse with age." the doctor said.

joe nodded.

I started crying, hating my mom again for what she'd done to me. my family.

because of her I made my daughter unhealthy.

"so what are our options?" joe asked.

the doctor looked down. "that's the thing, she's too young to treat as an adult. we're not sure. the only thing I can say is things will get worse before they get better." he said.

he then excused himself and left us.
