December 2015

The room was ice cold as I sat uncomfortably on the plastic foldable chair. I felt the lingering stares on me in the circle I sat in; I didn't want to be here.

"Today, we have a new member." I fidgeted with my picked-at fingers as the room was dead silent. Until Max, as I was told was her name, continued.

"Would you like to introduce yourself to the group?" She stared at me as my eyes remained locked with my fingers.

I felt trapped, scared, and nervous, and not a soul was speaking. I didn't like talking with people; in fact, I didn't really like people in general. because you can only trust so many.

"My name is Sloan." My voice came out softer than I expected, but I didn't think I'd be this nervous.

"Nice to meet you, Sloan," soft mumbles are released from the others surrounding.

"Tell us about yourself, Sloan. If you feel comfortable enough sharing, tell us why you joined us today." She had a kind smile and a clipboard in hand. Her hair was cinnamon, and her eyes were navy, ones that you could easily get lost in.

"My name is Sloan, and I was addicted to drugs," admitting it aloud was something I never wanted to do. But I'm doing this for Mom, even though I hate her. I know I am slowly destroying her. I'm doing this so I can say 'I was' not 'I am'.

"Thank you for sharing that with us, Sloan. I'm Max, the group advisor. We are so glad that you are here to join us today." She wrote my name down on her clipboard and turned to the girl sitting next to her.
