Birthdays for me weren't worth celebrating. It was a day of anticipation and expectation as a child, when you grow up... the magic of it dies. It's simply the day that I came to earth.

But as I stare at Avery who held a cupcake for me in the hall  topped with an illegal lit candle. I find a small sense of comfort from her.

"Happy 18th Sloan!"

"Is that a candle I see Miss Mackentire?" The candle was immediately blown out by Avery and she turned towards my locker.

I laugh as I approach her "A cupcake at 8am?"

"A girl only turns 18 once and I know you hate today. Plus now you can totally screw Alex" I felt my face drop from her words as she analyzed me.

"What you thought I didn't know? I've covered your ass three times with your mothers calls due to your rendezvous" she hands me the funfetti cupcake as I remove the candle.

"We are just friends, though I've never been with someone like him, you know like-"

"An actual guy, not to be a dick but Alex is someone a girl dreams of. Liam is an average frat boy who could use a couple inches of height and probably has a below average dick" I gasp as Avery begins to laugh.

"He's scrumptious Sloan, I don't blame you. But he's definitely not seventeen"

"He's twenty two" I close my eyes "He hasn't kissed nor touched me, we've just been friends" she pokes my shoulder and I open my eyes.

"But he wants to be more than friends hmm? Mysterious man from our coping group, not so anonymous anymore?" I took a bite of my cupcake drowning out her words.

"EIGHTEEN LADIES AND GENTLEMEN" I heard her voice trail down the hall, I wanted to hide inside my locker now "SHES 18!" Teddy's arms wrap around me as she squeezes me tight.

"Happy Birthday loser, I give you the gift of second hand embarrassing and an Amazon gift card" I accept the envelope from her and wipe the frosting from my face.

"Trying to erase the birthday trauma of Laura's in-fatuous stuffy parties with people I barely know?" Avery shrugs.

"I come bearing flowers!" Inez stood with a bouquet of Daisies "Happy 18th!" She handed me them and then my heart stopped.

As I looked up from the flowers he stood with her. Rosie didn't spare me a glance but Liam did, holding her hand.

"Not worth your time" Avery slams my locker and I follow her to first block.
