As I stood outside the door holding my sweet potato casserole smothered in marshmallows, I never wanted to turn around more in my life.

My mother rang the bell and the door swung open to Rosie's parents Andrew and Ruth "Happy Thanksgiving!" My parents took the arms of the two and once they stepped aside I was left in front of the two of them.

I hadn't seen them in months, and as they looked at me. Instead of what I feared would be hatred, they looked sad "It's so wonderful to see you Sloan!" Andrew took my casserole and Ruth wrapped her arms around me pulling me in close

"You've been missed very much in this house" she pulled back smiling at me "You know you're always welcome, no matter what" That's the thing about Ruth, for some reason I've always been one of her favorite people. So in a way, she was a bonus mother for me growing up.

"Thank you Ruth, Happy Thanksgiving" she wrapped her arm around mine as we strolled in, everything sat just the same as it always did. Their house was something out of a historical film from the 1800s, they restored their home from its original state.

It reminded me of the houses that Louisa May Alcott would write about the March sisters living in. So coming here throughout my life was always magical "The girls are in the den"

My stomach twist at the thought of it, the den would more likely be a lions den. I was sure that Rosie's sisters hated me by now, I ghosted her without an explanation "Oh I can come help you in the kitchen Ruth?"

"Please, go be with the girls. Me and your parents got it, plus I have to go finish making your favorite dessert"

"You made your cookies?" A smirk grew on her face as she shrugged and turned away to the kitchen leaving me alone in the hall. I was left in the opening to the den and the two of them stared at me.

"Oh my god Sloan!" Amy rushed up from her seat taking me into her arms as Beatrice added to the hug squeezing me tight.

"Oh it's so good to see you Sloan! We've missed you, we came back from school a few days and were surprised to not see you here?" I looked at them confused.

"What do you mean?" They pulled me to the couch and Amy leaned her head on my shoulder.

"Well Rosie told us you've been very busy so we hadn't seen you. We both got back from school a few days ago, waiting for you to pop in? Surprised she didn't tell you we were home" They were both in college Beatrice was a senior and Amy a sophomore. I was always here when they came back from school.

They were like my sisters in a way as well "I uh-"

"She's been terribly busy with her college applications, so many clubs to attend to for the extra curricular's right Sloan?" Her voiced drained my ears and as I turned to face her my stomach felt sour.
