We'd been at this beach house for a few days. It was a nice escape for a hot weekend in July and the busyness of the summer, well Adonis's summer.
Lila and Ace had been renting this home on the Vineyard. I was trying to slowly convince Ace to buy the place, I basically already claimed my own room. I knew a frank conversation between us needed to be had, I wanted to work on it. I didn't want anything up in the air when Lila pops.
So as he stood on the porch by himself, I shut the door to the house leaving us alone. The glass of red wine in his hand swished around and as he turned to see me, a small smile formed on his face.
"Can we talk?" For some reason asking Ace to talk scared me, I knew he wouldn't kill me. I was the best friend to his wife, and girlfriend to his best friend that would be a suicide mission for him.
"What's there to discuss Sloan?" He leaned against the railing as I stood beside him.
"I want to be able to trust you, that you won't just up in leave. But also that you won't hurt them, if it comes down to saving them and never seeing them again or putting them in danger by taking them with you. I want you to protect her Ace, she's glass okay" He seemed slightly annoyed by my words, but slowly he understood. I'd only ever seen Lila in truly vulnerable states.
I couldn't have her be hurt again, I couldn't watch her go through it, "I need you to promise me Ace. You said I do, but I need you to-"
"Sloan she's my wife, carrying my child. I'd die before a person could touch her okay? That woman who's snoring upstairs in the third bedroom to the left, she's my life. I knew it from the second I saw her Sloan. I only want to protect her and our child and even you." I nodded in silent agreement with him.
"Sloan I promise" He offered his hand out to me as a symbol of agreement, "I just want to be on good terms with you... you honestly scare me" I wanted to laugh, this man controlled a mafia and I was the scary thing in his life.
I ignore the hand and pulled him in for a hug, then let go, "Don't hurt her" I warn.
"Don't hurt him" He counters, my brows furrow in response. But then I nod in understanding, because those two people were both our worlds in ways. We'd do quite literally anything for them.
Ace had known me long before I knew him. That was something that freaked me out in a way, but he had time to know me. To adjust to who I was before I came back into his life.
The door to the porch opened and Adonis stood. He was in a nicer top than usual, "Why are you all dressed up? I thought we were playing casual with Ace's Italian restaurant" He chuckled taking my hand.
"Dress to impress Princess... go get changed into a dress. Ace is also going to be changing, post chefing" I looked back to him and he nodded in agreement, he obviously didn't know about this.
"Okay fine" A kiss is placed against my cheek as I walk back into the house leaving the two of them. I climb up the staircase and make my way down the hall to my room. But I stop as I hear it, hear her.
