I was heading to New York today. It was finally happening and I was excited. I decided to surprise Nathan with my arrival. I did not call him the night prior for this surprise. The restaurant was handled. The grand opening happened swimmingly and everything was good to go. They did not need me anymore, they could handle the rest on their own. I had other important things to do in New York. I needed Nathan. I also had a restaurant to run in the big city but Nathan came first. He was more important. I was leaving Texas today which prompted my aunt to make a big thing of it all. I had forgotten how much I missed my aunt. Growing up in Maine meant that my mother never got to see her sister. I missed my aunt. She was always so kind to me when I was little. I was glad she took me in for the last five months. I had nowhere to stay when I came to Texas and I was glad my mother had called her. I was going to miss my aunt when I left for New York. I would miss my cousin who I just recently reconnected with. I was going to miss Texas. It was fun here but it was not home. My home was with Nathan. I woke up early this morning. I had a lot of goodbyes to give before I departed. I awoke to my aunt in the kitchen. She was always in the kitchen. She was currently making breakfast. She had gotten so used to making breakfast for two once again that I wondered if she would remember I would not be here tomorrow. I'm going to talk to Travis about this. He should visit his mother more often. She must be lonely in this house alone. I greeted my aunt once I arrived in the kitchen and she gave me a warm smile.
"Good morning auntie. Breakfast smells amazing, what are we having?" I asked her after kissing her cheek and going to get myself some orange juice from the fridge. My aunt smiled at me before flipping the waffles she was currently making for this morning's breakfast.
"I'm making waffles for your last day. Travis and Tate will be coming by soon so I made extras" She explained before plating the delicious-looking waffles. My mouth started to water at the sight alone. She always made the most delicious food. I am going to miss the meals here every day. I quickly grabbed my orange juice before making my way to the kitchen table. I was ready to eat these delicious waffles. My aunt smiled before placing the plateful on the table and walking back to the stove to make a few more. I quickly grabbed a few and placed them on my plate before drowning them in tasty syrup. My aunt chuckled once she saw my plate.
"You eat your waffles just like your father" She explained and I tilted my head. I have never seen my father eat waffles. I have never even seen him eat. He had always been busy with the business. The business was his entire world. My aunt came to sit next to me once she noticed my reaction. I looked up at her.
"I guess he doesn't eat waffles anymore now, does he? He really has changed" She said and I simply looked at her. I didn't know that she knew my father before he became busy with the business. I don't even remember my father before his business took him. My mother says he was always around when I was younger. All I remember is him always working.
"You knew my father before he started the company?" I asked her and she smiled while nodding.
"Your mother, your father, my husband, and I all grew up together. We were all friends in high school. Your father always loved when I made him waffles. He would eat them just like you do. Drenched in syrup. You both have a sweet tooth" She explained and I listened to every word. I had no idea that they were all friends in high school. My mother never did tell me when she met my father or when they got together. I never asked her to be fair but she never told me.
"How was my father like back then?" I asked her and she smiled fondly.
"Your father was my best friend. We met when we were ten and we did everything together. My sister was a few months younger than me so she only met Donald when we entered high school. They actually did not like each other in the beginning but then after our senior year I got word that they were getting married" She explained and I was surprised. I had never known that she knew my father before my mom did. I always thought aunt Andrea knew my father from his marriage to her sister. I wonder what he was like during his childhood.
