Twin sisters name: MaeveMason had always been a family guy. He always says how he wouldn't be here without any of them, especially his twin sister Maeve. It was all true what he said. His whole life, everyone had doubted him, even his parents weren't confident he could make it, but his twin sister always did. She told him to just trust himself.
They've always had a special connection; they're twins, after all. They know when the other person is hurting; they know how to instantly make each other smile or laugh; they do fight sometimes, but it doesn't last longer than an hour.
Just a couple of months ago, Maeve moved to Greece. She had always wanted to live there and learn more about the culture. That meant she had to leave her family behind, Mason included. And it wasn't easy.
They had always been together, since birth. And now they both live in two different countries with different time zones and not as much face time as they would usually have. But there are far worse things happening in the world than to worry about that.
When Maeve found out that Mason would join the World Cup squad in Qatar and represent England, she immediately called him. They talked for hours about how crazy it was that he was going.
Unfortunately for Maeve, she couldn't leave Greece; she was working and couldn't get any days off from the restaurant she works at. So she spent the weeks watching the games on the TV in the restaurant, just like other people would.
England had reached the final, and Maeve couldn't help but feel so proud of her twin. He had made it, literally. And it was hurting her that she couldn't be there for him.
Her parents had called her, asking if she could get just a few days off, but she couldn't. Even Lewis had told her how much Mason really wanted his sister there, but she didn't know what more she could do other than just beg her boss to let her leave.
Days passed, and Maeve started feeling bad. She had spoken to Mason and he kept mentioning how fun it would be if she was just here with everyone else. She was missing her whole family. It was evident on her face how homesick she got. But little did she know her boss had noticed and decided to give her a week off.
She almost choked on water when she heard him say that. She didn't waste a second to pack her bags and leave for Qatar.
She had called Lewis, not able to contain her excitement. The final was in just two days, and she wanted to surprise her twin brother.
———
Maeve had arrived in Qatar a day ago. Mason still had no clue that she was there. She had FaceTimed him quickly this morning just so he wouldn't be suspicious. The whole family was surprised she was here—even she was. She never thought she would get days off, but here she was, keeping an eye on her nieces and nephew.
The final was tonight, and everyone had been nervous. They all keep distracting themselves by chilling by the pool at the hotel, going for walks, and doing activities.
Eventually, enough time had passed. Everyone put their England kits on with "MOUNT 19" on the back. Maeve was getting slightly nervous now—not much because of the game but to see her twin brother. She hadn't seen him in months, and being away from a twin is a tough job in itself. But she was so excited still.
———
The whole plan was to surprise Mason after the game, but he probably would've noticed her in the crowd anyway, and it would probably turn more into a shock than a surprise if he wasn't warned. They were sitting in the stands; there was still more than an hour left, and the squad was walking around the pitch, chit-chatting and examining the stadium.
Declan had managed to look up at his family, and his eyes went wide seeing Maeve there. He was aware that she was busy and couldn't be here; Mason had filled him in, so seeing her there surprised him too.
Maeve waved at Declan, also signaling for him to let Mason know. "Bro, you are not going to believe this," Declan dragged Mason over to himself.
"What?" He asked confused.
"Look," Declan pointed to where Mason's family was standing. Everyone waved to him; he smiled and waved back until he saw his twin sister waving too.
"Shut up!" He couldn't believe what he was seeing. His face lit up with a smile as he walked forward to the stands.
Maeve walked down to the stairs. "Come here, you goose," he said to her with a light, seeing her excitedly run over to him.
"Surprise!" She laughed as they both hugged each other over the barriers.
"I didn't think you could come," he said, still shocked as they leaned back from the hug.
"I don't know what happened, but they told me I could go, so I came yesterday."
"Wait, so you were here when we FaceTimed this morning?" He asked, still surprised.
"Yup, and now you better win this final," she warned him with a chuckle
"I still can't believe it," he shook his head with a smile.
"I'm really proud of you, Mase," she smiled, patting his shoulder. "We'll be rooting for you no matter what happens tonight," she assured him.
They hugged each other one last time before it was time for Mason to go back to the tunnel and get changed for the game.
———
It was defeat. Was it predicted? Maybe for some. But everyone was proud no matter what.
The boys had given it everything, but it wasn't enough this time. They went up to the stands to see their families. Mason hugged everyone one by one.
He took a seat next to Maeve after hugging her, and they both just sat there looking around the stadium, taking it all in.
"I know you just lost the final, but you should be so proud of yourself," she looked at him with pride.
He let out a soft chuckle, "Thanks, Maeve."
"So what now?" She asked curious, wanting to change the sad topic to a better one.
"I don't know," he shrugged, not feeling a good after the huge loss.
She looked over at him, knowing he was going to hurt for a bit. But as his twin, she also knew he was going to get over it at some point.
"I think you should get drunk and take a nice short vacation," she encouraged him, and he chuckled, shaking his head.
"You are a bad influence, sis."
"Hey," she hit his shoulder, "one of us had to be the irresponsible one," she laughed.
"And that turned out to be you," he laughed.
"You're so funny," she said sarcastically, making him smile. He put his arm around her shoulder, ruffling her hair like he always would when she was annoying.
"One of us had to he the funny one,"
