My Other Half
When you popped up, I was barely conscious to the world around me. You see, my best friend had just been murdered—no, sorry. He valiantly took down forty-nine of Kisaki's men before an unfortunate accident halted his rampage. To this day, I still find it hard to forgive Kazutora, but for Baji's sake, I grit my teeth and bare it. He'd be pretty sad up there if I spent my days wallowing in my self-hatred and incompetence when I could be bettering Touman instead. If Mikey can forgive Kazutora... Then I have to believe that I can someday bring myself to that conclusion as well. All that rambling, but that is not what this story is about... This story is about You... You and the warmth you breathed into me during a time where my body was as cold as my name sake. For those of you who aren't aware, the Chi in my name stands for "thousand" while fuyu means winter. As I watched Baji fall, I felt my name's sake sneak up and wash over me. As Mikey watched Baji cough out his last breaths... as I promised him the same meal we had shared together in middle school... I didn't think it'd ever be ok again... but then you showed up. You'd lost the same things I had... but you refused to let that weigh you down. Then you refused to let it weigh me down too, and for that, I will always be grateful to you.
Chapter 1:
The sun came up the next day, not at all deterred by the light that had been snuffed just a few days prior. Chifuyu felt betrayed by how the sun shined so brightly as he sat, head hung low before Baji's grave. His best friend and leader of the first division... How was he supposed to move on from here? He was a vice-captain of the first division... no captain. He couldn't hold a candle to most of Touman's captains, though Baji was leagues ahead of them. How was he supposed to step up into those shoes? What if Mikey didn't believe him worthy enough to lead Baji's division? Worse... what if the one person Baji left Touman to defeat... somehow managed to worm his way into the only thing Chifuyu had left?
"Oh."
A soft noise shocked Chifuyu from his reverie, forcing him to turn away from the grave before him. Shielding him from the sun, the girl before him couldn't be any older than he was. With jet black hair and bronze eyes, Chifuyu was sure he was seeing a ghost. Her eyes were wide, as if she didn't think she would find anyone here. Truth be told, it was past the hour for school to start, so perhaps she was right in her assumption. She seemed to squirm under Chifuyu's gaze, looking a little guilty. What for, Chifuyu couldn't tell.
"Kei would kill me if he saw what I'm about to do..." She muttered before sighing gently, eyes trailed on the blue sky above them.
Maybe she was visiting someone close to the Baji's grave? Either way, Chifuyu was sitting in front of his friend's grave and not obscuring anyone else's, so she could move along and leave him to his wallowing. His ire grew as she didn't make to move away.
"This ain't a show." He snapped, earning a small jump of her shoulders.
He would be lying if he said he didn't feel a slight stretch of satisfaction at how uncomfortable she seemed in his presence. Now, if only she could take the hint and leave him be. Yet, she didn't, and instead, chose to shift her weight from foot to foot, as if stalling for time. Maybe she was.
"Were you close to Kei?" She settled on, earning a raised brow from the first division's vice-captain.
Realization seemed to dawn on her before her fingers seemed to find perch in the sleeves of her baggy sweater. Chifuyu's gaze fell towards the sweatshirt, recognition lighting up in the back of his mind, though he couldn't quite tell why.
