Chapter 24:

You don't really know how many hours you and Mikey spent sitting at that pier. Fresh snow had started to fall around you, but it didn't keep the two of you from sharing stories and interjecting your own take on them as the minutes ticked by. You don't think you've ever heard Mikey talk so much. Between him and Emma, the latter usually picked up the slack. You were particularly fond of the story about his namesake.

"You're a good older brother." You stated as you leaned into Mikey for warmth.

"I wish I had been a little bit more like Baji." He states, gaze still trapped in the stars. "I would have tried to keep Emma as far away from Toman as I could." He divulged with a thin-lipped smile.

"You think Toman is dangerous?" You asked, hating the question after it had left your lips.

"It's already taken two people I love... how many more will I let it claim?"

It was a scary statement to take in, but he wasn't wrong. Kei had told you a lot about Shunichiro. The days where he'd gush about the older boy and how he'd learned beside him and improved faster than him... and the day that Kazutora had... made the wrong decision.

"Do you think Kei hates me?" You murmured. "For stumbling into relationships with you guys even after he had tried so hard to keep me away?"

There were a couple moments of silence, in where you were starting to wonder if you had said those thoughts aloud. Eventually, Mikey let out a soft breath that plumed before the two of you.

"I don't think Baji was capable of something like hate."

You blinked at those words before a smile took over your features.

"Ya, you're probably right."

Chifuyu was an absolute wreck. He had picked up his phone to text or call her at least a thousand times. He hadn't meant to snap at her like that... It was just... the last couple of days and information that had been crammed into his head were starting to take their toll on him. What was he supposed to do to change a desolate future? Was this how Takemichi had felt before he had told them about his ability to time leap? Was this how he still felt? Chifuyu couldn't imagine the ramifications that he would be met with at putting his life on the line to change the future and then going back only to see that it had indeed changed, but for the worse rather that the best. He didn't think he could stomach losing her over and over again. How many times had Takemichi watched Hina die? How many times had he watched his friends die?

An engine revving in the distance drew his turquoise gaze to the door. He'd recognize the sound of that bike from just about anywhere. Standing, he grabbed his coat and slipped into his boots lazily. Takemichi had long since left him to his own devices. Even Pey and Yang were ignoring him today, as if they too, couldn't believe how awful he'd treated her. Pushing the door open, the first division's vice-captain bit back curses as the wind bit into any uncovered skin it could find.

Sure enough, when he looked over the railing, he found her getting off Mikey's bike. There was an ugly moment of jealousy that consumed him. He pushed it down, even as she leaned in and gave the commander a hug. Mikey's gaze landed on him, jolting Chifuyu slightly. The look in Mikey's eyes was unnerving. Had she told him what he'd said? He wouldn't blame her had she done so. Still, the idea of his commander having it out for him wasn't exactly great. After much longer than Chifuyu deemed necessary, she pulled away from Toman's leader, setting his helmet on his back seat before waving and running towards the metal stairs. Mikey smiled before turning his attention back towards Chifuyu and raising a brow. Embarrassment colored Chifuyu's cheeks as he turned away. He already knew he'd fucked up, he didn't need Mikey to tell him.
