Chapter 13:
You could not be any more anxious for your discharge papers to be signed. Your mother is growing more and more impatient with your incessant jittering. She was just happy to see that you'd be leaving the hospital. It wasn't really the plan, but what she didn't know wouldn't kill her. She had to head back to work right after the process. She'd taken too much time off while you were actually in the hospital, and her boss refused to let another day slide. He was a jackass, but you had to feel at least a smidgen of thanks for the man's surprising good timing.
"You're heading straight home, right?" Your mother asked for the zillionth time.
"Yup." You chirped, not at all guilty for the lie that left your lips.
She sighed heavily as the bus taking her to work pulled up. She bent down, pressing a quick kiss to your forehead. You smiled, giving her a hug before the bus's doors opened.
"Please be safe. Call me for anything." She yells before the doors close.
You wave eagerly as the bus pulls away. You've still got bandages littering your limbs, but nothing's broken. It's a blessing in disguise. You would trade nearly every bone being broken for Chifuyu to open his eyes. Long after the bus has left your sight, you take a deep breath and turn to head back into the hospital. The automatic doors admit you openly. The nurses look up, cocking their heads.
"Forget something, Baji?" One of them asks politely.
"Something like that." You say gently, adjust the bag on your shoulder.
You've got Takashi's dishes in there. You'd manage to clean them in the bathroom. It's not the best of jobs, but it's the best that you could do. Making your way by the nurses, you smile politely as you head back from whence you came. It doesn't take long for you to find a room with your friend's name plaque outside. 'Matsuno Chifuyu' Is printed in bold letters, turning your stomach as you stare at it. You don't really know how many minutes you stand with your hand on the handle, but it must have been far too long, because a nurse inquires about whether you're alright or not.
"Oh. Fine." You force a smile on your face.
He seems to read through your turmoil, before he smiles, offering you some encouraging words.
"Matsuno's a tough kid. It's not the first time we've seen him or his friends here." He muses, making you let out a gentle breath of a laugh. "He'll be fine. Everything in his charts lead to that conclusion." He says before continuing to walk by you.
Taking another breath, you stele yourself to walk into the first division vice-captain's room. Your eyes land on a devastating sight. Chifuyu's definitely trying to compete with a damn mummy with how much bandaging you can see on him. Peaking out from the collar of his hospital gown you can see more bandaging. Your thoughts wander back towards the warehouse and the happenings that occurred. You remembered the way Chifuyu had screamed at a blade entering his arm. You had been haunted by that scream too many times before. You couldn't remember sleeping through a night without it waking you up lately.
"Oh Chifuyu..." You mutter, not able to stop the tears that fall this time any more than the others you've shed for this boy this week alone.
You pull the sliding door to his room closed behind you, making your way over to your best friend. There's an oxygen mask over his mouth and nose, sending another pang through your chest.
