Tonowari was a changed man after your departure, he resented himself putting his duties above his feelings was something he never wanted to do. His choices did cost him his happiness and the future he wanted with you.
It has been a year since he became the Olo'eyktan of the Metkayina clan his father stepping down, as well as his mother who passed her role to Ronal.
People noticed that the relationship between Tonowari and Ronal was strange. The way they acted wasn't how mates acted the tension was suffocating.
That's because they never mated and performed tsaheylu in front of Eywa. Tonowari refused he couldn't see himself sharing such a precious and important in his life with a woman he didn't love.
It wasn't easy for Ronal to accept it, she really liked Tonowari and she grew up with a strict traditional mindset. She knew the feelings you had for him and was relieved when you left the clan. Hoping Tonowaris attention would be on her and his future duties.
But she was wrong after his confession to you, he made his way to Ronal to come clean to her, he respected her and wouldn't want to tarnish her in any way.
'We can't mate Ronal' he said while making sure nobody could hear them in their shared Mauri.
'It's her isn't it?' she forced a smile onto her face wishing she misheard him. Her tail wrapped around her leg something that happens when she's nervous or distraught.
'Yes' he muttered quietly not breaking their eye contact. He wanted to grab her hands but she stepped back.
'I always knew you loved her you know? But with our engagement I thought those feelings would vanish. You were always somewhere else with your thoughts during our lessons. But I came to realize this only happened when she was around' Ronal said with glossy eyes.
Tonowari breath hitched surprised by her observations, you were always on his mind even she could tell. Closing his eyes he tries to come up with a possible solution that won't end in a huge disaster.
'She's gone but I promised her I'd wait for her, I know she's coming back she has to. I'll undergo the ritual with you but I can't be your mate. You'll be a wonderful Tsahik and nobody can take that from you Ronal.'
'There is no chance that you'll change your mind?' she asked timidly.
He sighs walking up to her to hug her, placing his chin on her head. Ronal knew the answer but wrapped her arms around his waist.
