22. BLESSED - 1 SAMUEL

2:1-10; 18-21
And Hannah prayed, and said,
My heart rejoiceth in the LORD,
mine horn is exalted in the LORD:
my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies;
because I rejoice in thy salvation. *1

There is none holy as the LORD:
for there is none beside thee:
neither is there any rock like our God. *2

Talk no more so exceeding proudly;
let not arrogancy come out of your mouth:
for the LORD is a God of knowledge,
and by him actions are weighed. *3

The bows of the mighty men are broken,
and they that stumbled are girded with strength. *4

They that were full have hired out themselves for bread;
and they that were hungry ceased:
so that the barren hath born seven;
and she that hath many children is waxed feeble. *5

The LORD killeth, and maketh alive:
he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up. *6

The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich:
he bringeth low, and lifteth up. *7

He raiseth up the poor out of the dust,
and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill,
to set them among princes, and to make them
inherit the throne of glory:
for the pillars of the earth are the LORD'S,
and he hath set the world upon them. *8

He will keep the feet of his saints,
and the wicked shall be silent in darkness;
for by strength shall no man prevail. *9

The adversaries of the LORD
shall be broken to pieces;
out of heaven shall he thunder upon them:
the LORD shall judge the ends of the earth;
and he shall give strength unto his king,
and exalt the horn of his anointed. *10

But Samuel ministered before the LORD,
being a child, girded with a linen ephod. *18

Moreover his mother made him a little coat,
and brought it to him from year to year,
when she came up with her husband
to offer the yearly sacrifice. *19

And Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife,
and said, The LORD give thee seed
of this woman for the loan
which is lent to the LORD.
And they went unto their own home. *20

And the LORD visited Hannah,
so that she conceived, and bare three sons
and two daughters. And the child Samuel
grew before the LORD. *21

15:22-24
And Samuel said, Hath the LORD
as great delight in burnt offerings
and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice
of the LORD?
Behold, to obey is better
than sacrifice, and to hearken
than the fat of rams.

For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft,
and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.
Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD,
he hath also rejected thee from being king. *23

And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned:
for I have transgressed the commandment
of the LORD, and thy words: because
I feared the people, and obeyed their voice. *24

Therefore David inquired of the LORD, saying,
Shall I go and smite these Philistines?
And the LORD said unto David, Go,
and smite the Philistines, and save Keilah. *2

And David abode in the wilderness
in strong holds, and remained in a mountain
in the wilderness of Ziph.
And Saul sought him every day,
but God delivered him not into his hand. *14

And they two made a covenant
before the LORD: and David abode
in the wood, and Jonathan went to his house. *18

But the men were very good unto us,
and we were not hurt,
neither missed we anything,
as long as we were conversant with them,
when we were in the fields: *15

They were a wall unto us both by night and day,
all the while we were with them keeping the sheep. *16

Now therefore know
and consider what thou wilt do;
for evil is determined against our master,
and against all his household:
for he is such a son of Belial,
that a man cannot speak to him. *17

I pray thee, forgive the trespass of thine handmaid:
for the LORD will certainly make my lord a sure house;
because my lord fighteth the battles of the LORD,
and evil hath not been found in thee all thy days. *28

And David said to Abigail,
Blessed be the LORD God of Israel,
which sent thee this day to meet me: *32

And blessed be thy advice,
and blessed be thou, which hast kept me
this day from coming to shed blood,
and from avenging myself
with mine own hand. *33

For in very deed, as the LORD God
of Israel liveth, which hath kept me back
from hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted
and come to meet me, surely there had not been
left unto Nabal by the morning light
any that pisseth against the wall. *34

So David received of her hand
that which she had brought him,
and said unto her, Go up in peace
to thine house; see, I have hearkened
to thy voice, and have accepted thy person. *35

And Abigail came to Nabal; and,
behold, he held a feast in his house,
like the feast of a king; and Nabal's heart
was merry within him, for he was very drunken:
wherefore she told him nothing,
less or more, until the morning light. *36

But it came to pass in the morning,
when the wine was gone out of Nabal,
and his wife had told him these things,
that his heart died within him,
and he became as a stone. *37

And it came to pass about ten days after,
that the LORD smote Nabal, that he died. *38

And when David heard that Nabal was dead,
he said, Blessed be the LORD,
that hath pleaded the cause of my reproach
from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept his servant
from evil: for the LORD hath returned
the wickedness of Nabal upon his own head.
And David sent and communed
with Abigail, to take her to him to wife. *39

And when the servants of David were come
to Abigail to Carmel, they spake unto her,
saying, David sent us unto thee,
to take thee to him to wife. *40

And she arose, and bowed herself
on her face to the earth, and said, Behold,
let thine handmaid be a servant
to wash the feet of the servants of my lord. *41

And Abigail hasted, and arose,
and rode upon an ass, with five damsels
of hers that went after her;
and she went after the messengers of David,
and became his wife. *42

David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel;
and they were also both of them his wives. *43

But Saul had given Michal his daughter,
David's wife, to Phalti the son of Laish,
which was of Gallim. *44

26:23-25
The LORD render to every man his righteousness
and his faithfulness: for the LORD delivered thee
into my hand to day, but I would not stretch forth
mine hand against the LORD'S anointed. *23

And, behold, as thy life was much set
by this day in mine eyes, so let my life
be much set by in the eyes of the LORD,
and let him deliver me out *24

Then Saul said to David, Blessed be thou,
my son David: thou shalt both do great things,
and also shalt still prevail.
So David went on his way,
and Saul returned to his place. *25
