(Outskirts of New York, Y/n's POV)

Restraints tying me down to the chair.

A chinstrap holding my head firmly in one position.

I scream in agony as the needle pushes past my flesh, past my skull, and into the soft tissue of my brain.

He steps back from my chair, and looks over to the man at the monitor.

"Turn it on."

"Sir, this is the highest we've ever done. And the highest we can go. This is it."

"Please," I say faintly as cold sweat pours down my forehead. "Please."

But my begging is ignored.

"Turn it on," he says again.

I know what comes next.

I take a deep breath in just before I hear the switch being flicked, then thousands of volts of electricity are sent coursing through my body.

I shoot up in my bed, shaking and drenched in sweat, as the lights flicker around me. My covers are in a pile on the floor, and the sheets themselves are all dishevelled. My necklace is pulled tight against my neck, but I yank it off and throw it to the floor, before wiping my face with my hands.

"Ah!" I shout as I grab the ornament from the window and throw it across the room.

When will this end? It's been three years since I got away from the Hydra Research Base, and the nightmares have never eased up.

It's not like I even need them. It's not like I'd forget any of it.

Volunteers my ass. No, I was snatched, and forced to undergo testing. Experimenting.

Torture.

My part in it all was an accident. I didn't exactly mean to let my powers show.

I guess it's kinda hard to keep your emotions in check after you've seen your parents be killed in front of you.

Apparently I caused a power outage across the whole of New York. Like I said, accident.

But for them, it was an opportunity. Doctor List grabbed me from the darkness and drove me away in a small, black minivan.

That was the last time I saw sunlight for about a year.

I had already revealed my main strength to everyone, so List knew exactly where to start. Exactly what to do.

He pushed me. Tested my limits. Made me even stronger than I was.

But the pain was unbearable.

There was...... Something. Inside the Tesseract. I couldn't look straight at it, it was too bright. Blinding. There was something from it that passed into me.

It was like my blood was boiling in my veins.

The pain would go away, and he'd pump me full of electricity. He wanted to see how I could control it.

He told me that this was all for the greater good, that I would have a part to play in the war, that we would win, but I could see straight into his mind. His intentions were impure. I saw fragments of plans unfinished. Different routes, different ideas.

But the ending will always be the same.

And I have no intention of stopping it.
