The next day Neteyam and Nani went alone to practice again. This task today was not meant for the younger kids.
"Today, we are going beyond the reef."
"Beyond the reef?" Neteyam asked, a little shocked but excited to learn, "let's do it." He smiled.
Nani called for an Ilu and Neteyam followed along. "First, we will practice our breathing. Make sure that you didn't lose anything of what I taught you yesterday."
Neteyam watched was Nani hopped on her Ilu, the water glistening off of her skin. Her curly long hair draping down her back, he quickly looked away before she could notice his stare.
"Try to keep up, forest boy!" Nani smiled and dove down into the ocean with her Ilu. Neteyam, lost in his thoughts quickly hopped on the Ilu he called and followed behind her.
Nani was unforgiving, going as fast as she wanted to and hoping he wouldn't get lost. Eventually she turned her head, and Neteyam was not far behind. She laughed to herself; he looked funny the way he was focusing so hard to catch up to her.
Suddenly he swam beside her, turning sharply causing her to sway back. She smiled and followed behind him now, going in circles and twirling amongst each other.
Finally, after some time, the both of them went to the surface for air. "So, you have been practicing!" She smiled at him; his skills have definitely improved in the matter of days.
"I told you," He smiled back, gaining back his breath from the sea.
"Come on, we're close to the edge of the reef. Just follow me, don't stray too far." Nani warned and took a deep breath, diving back in. Neteyam listened to her word and followed close behind. It was only about a 5-minute journey before the waves became rougher. Neteyam watched as Nani's Ilu jumped out of the water and back in, riding the waves as they came. He followed suit behind her, riding the waves alongside her. "Yeah!!" He screamed out in success, making Nani smile.
Eventually they reached their destination. Nani broke to the surface of the water and Neteyam followed.
"We are here, this is three brothers rock." She said, unraveling her braid from her Ilu and walking onto the rocky surface.
"Oh woah!" Neteyam exclaimed as he followed behind her, "this is, breathtaking. You can't even see your island from here."
"Nope," she grinned, "it's nice to escape out here sometimes."
"Do you ever go past here?" He asked curiously.
She shook her head, "Never."
Neteyam responded with silence, focusing back on the water. "What about the island? Do you explore the jungle there?"
"Sometimes," she answered, "it's just not completely safe, so we stick to the water. To what we know. I wish I could though, it would be nice to escape sometime."
