Eclipse was over and they had made it back to their village. Kiri laid unconscious in their home as sky people worked on her with high tech machines. Neteyam waited outside worried, wondering if and when she was going to wake up.
Ronal came walking through the village, ready to work on the girl and try to heal her through Eywa. Nani followed her mother, holding all of the supplies she needed to work. Nani made eye contact with Neteyam as she passed by. He looked so sad; an expression Nani had never seen on him.
She handed her mother the supplies and waited outside. Turning and walking up to Neteyam as he leaned up on the Marui. "Are you okay?" Nani asked him.
"I- I'm just worried," He looked down at his hands, "I feel helpless."
"Let my mother take a look at her, I'm so sorry Neteyam." Nani placed a hand up on his shoulder, trying her best to console him.
"Thank you." He placed his hand on hers and gave a weak smile.
"She's awake! Kiri is awake." Tuk came out of their home quickly to tell Neteyam.
"Oh, thank you great mother." Nani said holding her hands together to her chest.
Neteyam quickly stood straight making his way over, "I- I have to-"
"Go," Nani'ite assured him.
He turned and walked towards the house, but paused, turning around to say in a whisper, "Hey, meet me tonight, right here by the dock. Can you do that?"
"Uh, yeah." Nani quickly thought, "Yes, I will be here." she nodded her head; he nodded his head back and made his way into the Marui.
Hours passed by and it was well into nighttime, by now all of the village was resting, just as Nani should be doing. She quietly slipped out of her bed, snuck out of her room and out of her home. Her heart paced as she tried her best to tip toe out of there. She had never snuck out before; it was far too dangerous. She had always obeyed her parent's wishes.
She quietly made her way through the village until she reached the Sully house, outside was Neteyam sitting with his feet in the water. He heard her creep up and he got up swiftly.
"Hey." He smiled down at her.
"Hi." She looked up at him then around, "What are we doing?"
"Can you take us to that beach, the one we went to last time." He whispered. Nani nodded and led the way as they made their way out to the private beach. Far enough from the entire village to not have to be as quiet.
It was her favorite beach, and at night it was even more beautiful than usual. Behind them was a plush jungle full of glowing plants, and the ocean lit up at night. Full of underwater plants and fishes that kept the ocean bright.
"I love it here." Nani said under her breath as she walked onto the sand.
"Nani," Neteyam grabbed her hand, his first time ever calling her by her nickname. Nani looked down at their hands and quickly looked up to his eyes, "I want to show you something."
"What is it?" She asked warily.
Neteyam turned and walked towards the jungle and made a few bird-like calling sounds. Nani followed behind him, confused on what he was trying to do. Suddenly a large ikran came down, flapping its wings and making sand fly up as he landed in front of them. Neteyam stuck his arm out, protecting Nani from coming any closer.
"Easy boy, mawey." Neteyam said as he approached his ikran, petting him on his head. "Be careful," he said back to Nani, "do not look into his eyes."
Nani quickly focused on anything but his ikrans eyes, taking a look at its skin. It was a beautiful green and blue striped creature. "This is my ikran, I've had him for years. " Neteyam smiled. "It's okay, you can touch him, look."
Neteyam grabbed Nani's hand and showed her where to pet right onto his head. Nani smiled in amazement. The only time she had ever seen one was the first time the Sully family had arrived at the island.
"Do you want to ride?" Neteyam asked.
Nani'ite quickly shot Neteyam a look of fear, a look Neteyam was not used to seeing on her face.
"Don't worry," He said down to her, "I will protect you."
Nani nodded her head with a nervous smile, "Okay."
Neteyam smiled, pulling down his ionar that looked like wings just above eyes. Nani thought they made him look beautiful in a way; she grinned as she watched him make the bond and straddle on his ikran.
"C'mon, behind me." Neteyam said, reaching down to give her a hand. Nani took his arm and swung onto the ikran right behind him. She grabbed under his arms and loosely around his waist.
"Hold on tight." He said back to her and called out to ikran, sending them into the air towards the water.
Nani gasped out, instantly holding tighter onto Neteyam as they took off, causing him to smile wide.
