Another week passed by, and the couple had somehow gotten away with sneaking out at night still. Neteyam had the feeling his mom was on to him, but for some reason she didn't stop him.
She already warned him to be careful with the clan leader's daughter, but Neytiri saw herself in her son. She felt the disappointment from her parents when they discovered she had mated with Jake, going against their arrangements to be with Tsu'tey. She could only pray that he was being careful, but she obvious to the fact that they were flying into the jungle.
Tensions were beginning to rise in the village. Lo'ak had bonded with Payakan causing Nani's parents to scold him in front of Jake and Neytiri. Nearby villages were beginning to be attacked by sky people, which worried her father. It was only a matter of time before they came looking here; everyone was on high alert.
Neteyam and Nani'ite had grown closer over the past week, in every way possible. They talked for hours every night and got pretty comfortable with exploring each other's bodies. Making love was an every night occasion for them, they just couldn't help themselves.
During the days they would train with the others, but there wasn't much left for the Sully kids to learn. Occasionally the two would sneak off during daylight and steal a few moments to be with each other, but no one had figured out their secret yet. They we're mated for life, and only they knew it.
Tonight, they laid together under the stars in their own sacred spot of the jungle. Nani laid with her head on her lover's chest.
"Which star did you say your dad was from, again Teyam?"
"That one." Neteyam pointed, "Earth."
"Earth." Nani repeated after him, thinking all she was taught about it, a planet killed by its own people.
"Speaking of my dad, Nani. I think we should tell him about us, he will help us tell your parents."
"What?" Nani sat up and looked down at him, "No, we can't do that."
"Come on Nani," He sat up to face her, "we're going to have to tell them eventually."
"We will-"
"You keep saying that." Neteyam's jaw clenched. Nani'ite sensed the shift in his attitude, it was rare for Neteyam to be upset with her. Nani's eyebrows furrowed and looked at the boy in front of her without saying a word.
"You keep saying that we'll do it when it's time but it's never going to be the right time." Neteyam explained, "I'm tired of having to hide our love from everyone."
"Neteyam, I would be disowned-"
"You don't know that Nani'ite." Neteyam sighed, standing up and walking towards the water stream by them.
"Hey," Nani stood up and followed him, "I do know that! My parents have been speaking this whole week about finding me a mate before-"
"You already have a mate, Nani'ite!" Neteyam raised his voice quickly turning to face her. "I am your mate!"
"Obviously," she replied with her own attitude, "they don't know that yet though."
"Obviously, you can't keep keeping me in the dark!" He bit back. Nani had only ever been on the other side of Neteyam's anger once, and she didn't like it. He was gentle most of the times, but he was still a man willing to stand up for what he believed to be right.
"Neteyam, we can tell them in a couple weeks, let's just enjoy this peace for a little longer."
"This is what you call peace?" He asked with his arms going up, "Hiding in the jungle every night to be together? What is it Nani, are you ashamed of me or what?"
"Are you serious?" She pushed his chest, but he didn't budge, "Don't say stupid stuff like that! Of course, I'm not ashamed of you Neteyam!"
"I'm just not good enough for your parents, is that what it is?" He said down to Nani through gritted teeth.
Nani'ite clenched her jaw and shook her head faintly, "No one is good enough for my parent's, Neteyam. This is not what this is about."
"It's always about them!" He spoke with his hands moving and eyes wide, "You're too scared to face them because you're scared of being a disappointment to them."
"Look at you, Neteyam!" Nani yelled back, "Your parents knew you we're sneaking out and look! You're still here and able to come out at night because you're they're perfect little golden child. You do no wrong, so I don't expect you to understand."
"I'm the golden child?" He bit his cheek and said lowly, "No, I'm the child who has to take care of my siblings like they're my own. You're jealous that my parents actually respect and trust me!"
His word's hurt Nani, because it was the truth. Tears began forming in her eyes, but she quickly turned so she didn't have to face Neteyam.
"Hey!" He grabbed her arm as she walked away.
"Leave me alone!" She swatted his hand off of her, she needed just a minute alone to come up with a plan. She began walking, letting her mind race.
"Stay close!" Neteyam called out behind her, she didn't stop. He huffed with an eyeroll, following his mate behind at a distance. "Nani, can you stop please? We don't know our way around this jungle!" Neteyam called out again behind her.
Nani's ears rang with annoyance. She was at her breaking point; she didn't know what the right thing was to do. She truly loved Neteyam, and she would do anything for him. So why was it so hard for her to confront her parents with the truth? Maybe it was her fear of disappointing them or being never good enough for them. Why should I care what they think? She thought, Neteyam wants a life together. He truly loves me, why am I fucking everything up?
Suddenly Nani was stopped by an animal jumping in front of her path, a lone viperwolf hissed in front of her, showing its teeth. She looked around, she had wondered off too far while she was in deep thought.
"Neteyam!" She yelled out in a shaky voice, causing three more viperwolves to spring out of the jungle's greenery. She had no clue what to do, she had never seen these animals or what they could do.
Quickly Neteyam ran following her path once he heard her yell. He stumbled upon the scene of the pack circling Nani'ite, he knew exactly what they were planning to do to her.
