River Anduin

A few nights after their departure from Lothlórien, the group made camp by the river, a fire soon crackling merrily. Sam had become quite the cook and Nyx found herself much enjoying what he made. Traveling on the road meant meals couldn't be outstanding but Sam made some pretty good ones. The group also got along fairly well, talking quietly amongst themselves.

Late that night, Merry and Pippin were chatting to themselves while Boromir and Aragorn spoke in hushed voices. Nyx could sense the anger in their words backed up by Aragorn storming away. Nyx only leaned her head against the tree she sat by.

Merry and Pippin turned their attention to Nyx, the only other person still awake. "Do you know any songs Nyx? We haven't heard any of yours," Merry said.

She tilted her head, thinking. Maglor had often composed some wishing to explain his feelings regarding their oath. It made things easier when they felt alone in the world. As a result, he often shared them with her, singing while she worked on a project of some sort.

Nyx began to hum softly, a song of her own composition. She had made it after surviving the mountains, after the battles and the death that had surrounded her. In her song, her sorrow came through as well as a sliver of hope.

To all things housed in her silence
Nature offers a violence
The bear that keeps to his own line
The wolf that seeks always its own kind
The world that hardens as the harsher winter holds
The parent forced to eat its young before it grows
Every bird gone unheard
Starving where the ground has froze
The winter sunrise, red on white
Like blood upon the snow
Like blood upon the snow

Her voice grew in strength some of the other members of the Fellowship glancing at her as she sang. Her voice was quiet in the still night but with a strength none could explain to the world.

The ground walked here is a wonder
It ceases never to wonder
And all things nature's given
She takes all things back from the living
I've walked the earth
and there as so few here that know
How dark the night and just
How cold the wind can blow
I've no more hunger now to see
Where the road will go
I've no more kept my warmth
Than blood upon the snow
Blood upon the snow
Blood upon the snow
Blood upon the snow

Nyx hummed quietly to herself, taking the place of instruments. Her song spoke of unimaginable loneliness and grief, feelings she had felt in the cold mountains. There she had been utterly alone, cold and lost as her blood froze to her skin. As her own blood helped keep her warm on the darkest nights.

It's not my arms that will fail me
But this world takes more strength than it gave me
The trees deny themselves nothing
That makes them grow
No rain fall, no sunshine
No blood upon the snow
Blood upon the snow
Blood upon the snow
Blood upon the snow
To all things housed in her silence
Nature offers a violence

As her song finished, the others smiled and nodded gratefully at her. Songs spoke of their owners and brought the listeners together in honor of the music. They each had a respect for music and the tales it wove.

Most of them were soon fast asleep, including Merry and Pippin. Boromir sat on watch while Nyx leaned against a tree, her head resting on its trunk. She soon began to nod off to sleep and her head laid on her knees which had been brought up to her chest. Her cloak wrapped around her, keeping her warm in the chilly air.
