Throughout this entire week, Su-ae has been consistently putting in work towards making Eunhyeok agree to her stupid plan. Every time I'm sitting with him in class, she comes over to us or throws a piece of paper at him with some little message on it. I try to ignore it, but Su-ae's overbearing efforts make it hard to.
The class bell rings and students rush out. Eunhyeok stands up, keeping the conversation going and Su-ae waltzes over to us. She grabs his arm to stop him from walking away from her and doesn't realize she interrupted us once again. Eunhyeok side-eyes her before turning to face her. I can see that he's uncomfortable with the look he gave me but knowing Su-ae, I didn't do anything.
"Are you really not going to hear me out?" She pleads with her eyes.
The class begins to murmur and all attention is suddenly on the door. I look past Su-ae and Eunhyeok. I see Dohwa walking into the classroom and over to us, pulling out a chair from another student's desk. He places it in front of where I'm still sitting and takes a seat in front of me.
"How long are you going to keep this up-" Eunhyeok begins to ask exasperatedly before he is cut off by another voice.
"Hi," Dohwa says to me and I grin at him. I can see Eunhyeok in my peripheral vision looking at us confusedly but his gaze switches over to Su-ae when she lets go of his arm.
"Oh, hi Dohwa!" Su-ae exclaims. I sit there in confusion. When did they start to talk? Su-ae walks over to lean on Eunhyeok's desk and begins a conversation with Dohwa.
Some of Eunhyeok's friends call out his name at that very moment and ask him if he is going to join them for lunch. He nods and complies, his bag already on his shoulder so he just leaves without a look back. I think that he is grateful for the interruption and I feel relieved for him.
"Oh! That reminds me... these are yours, right?" Dohwa leans down to the floor and unzips his bag, pulling out a light stack of textbooks.
"What?! Where did you get these?" Su-ae asks, bewildered.
"I just found them," Dohwa replies smugly and I just sit there as I wait for the two of them to finish talking.
"Just found them? But, wait a minute... Why are there only two? Where's the rest?" She asks with an accusing voice.
"At home. They were way too heavy to carry." He smiles 'cutely' to her and I turn away.
When did they get so close or even start to acknowledge each other?
Sure, we were sisters. Twins, at that. It wasn't like I was jealous or worried about sharing my best friend with her (if that was even a possibility). But it felt like we had always lived separate lives. We never shared the same friend group or anything of the sort. I can't even remember the last time Su-ae and I went to a party together. It shouldn't feel like it but everything that I do or she does concerns one another.
Minu's voice allows me to escape my trance of thoughts.
"What are you doing Su-ae? The teacher is looking for you," He says as he pulls her by the arm and drags her away as she continuously questions him about why.
Minu greets Dohwa and they exchange a few lines before finally leaving the room with Su-ae.
Dohwa finally decides to acknowledge my presence as soon as Su-ae is out of sight but I only stare at him as he looks at me.
"How are you?" He asks and I yawn. I blink tiredly. I don't respond, I lay my head on top of my arms and look past him.
"Sorry, are you tired? Maybe this isn't a good time..." He trails off and I notice him glancing at the door. He raises himself up from the chair and begins to slowly leave.
I contemplate on whether I should just let him go or entertain the conversation. I choose the latter. "Yeah, I guess I am kind of tired."
He hears my speech and pulls the chair back out to sit once again.
"Well, when are you not?" He jokes and waits for a response. When he looks at me I furrow my eyebrows and decide to ask what's on my mind.
"When did you start to talk to my sister?"
"I just ran into her at the arcade a night ago and we were playing a game. Why?" He asks before adding, "You know, she's really good at arcade games?"
"Yeah, of course I know. Su-ae goes there after school a lot." I replied and leaned against the back of the chair.
"Wait, really?" His eyes light up. He doesn't even try to hide it. "Whatever, that isn't important right now. What about you? You never answered my question."
"What question?" I try to act confused, but really, I know what he's about to ask and I don't know how to answer him.
"Do you like Eunhyeok?" He asked me. He folds his arms and the room is coated with a thick silence. I break it after a few moments.
"Uh... how do I put this? ...I don't know? I'm still trying to figure it out, it's only been a couple of days since you last asked," I say, sitting up to mimic his pose and posture. "It's also kind of hard to figure out how I feel about him when Su-ae is always hovering over us whenever we're together."
He nods, understandingly. He rises up from his chair and extends his hand towards me, helping me stand. We then walked to the canteen to finally eat lunch and Dohwa didn't mention Eunhyeok again.
