Eunhyeok walked me home earlier today and now I'm out once again with Su-ae. We're on a mission to go to the grocery store because Su-ae's cold passed, thanks to the medicine that I had bought for her this morning.
It was late at night now. Su-ae and I got the random urge to pull an all-nighter and bake treats. Since it was a Saturday night, we gave into the urge and walked into the dimly lit corner store.
As we walked up and down the aisles of the only grocery store we could find nearby that was open, we decided on buying the ingredients to make a crepe cake. We picked various colors of food dye because we wanted to make a rainbow one.
After we purchased and secured our grocery bags we began to walk back to our place. When we got there we unpacked the bags, cleaned up, and then set up the kitchen to begin.
Our parents had called us earlier to let us know that they would be arriving home very late, because they had stayed out for longer than they anticipated and it would be a long drive home due to the distance of where we lived and the city that they traveled to. Ra-im texted as well to inform us that she was staying at a friend's place for the night. That meant that we had the house all to ourselves for the night.
I ran to my room to grab my portable Bluetooth speaker and my laptop so that we could read off the instructions for baking on a bigger screen. I connected my laptop to the speaker and started to play music.
We got started, dividing different parts of the steps required to each other and listened to background music while catching up with everything that's been going on with school, friends, and interests we shared.
I was having fun mixing rainbow food dye into portions of the crepe batter while Su-ae was rinsing off a spoon that she had dropped on the floor.
When we finished all of the preparations for the cake we took two frying pans out of a cabinet to pour the batter into and fry up the crepes.
I walked over to the stove and turned two of the notches to the appropriate setting so that Su-ae could fry crepes on one side of the stove while I could work on the other. We were repeating the process of frying the crepes and setting them onto a large plate when they were finished over and over again.
We had made extra to just lay aside for a snack later and to do other things with them, like dousing them with Nutella and strawberries.
Once we completed the task of frying the batter on the stove, we began spreading whipped cream filling over the tops of the individual crepes.
I had found a pretty cake stand in the cabinets upon my search for the measuring cup when we were laying out the utensils and such earlier, so we stacked them onto the stand.
Su-ae and I had finally managed to finish assembling the cake, so we then set it aside in the fridge so that it could cool for about two hours.
We sat at the kitchen counter with a jar half full of Nutella and sliced strawberries in a bowl. Su-ae grew impatient of waiting after just twenty minutes of putting the cake in the fridge, so we took out the extra crepes that were originally supposed to be for later.
I wanted to enjoy the cake when it came out of the fridge once it was fully done and I didn't want to get tired of eating so many crepes, so I began dipping the strawberries in the Nutella by themselves.
It was two in the morning now and we heard the door open and then click shut. We both froze in our places, my arm freezing mid-air as I was about to place a strawberry in my mouth.
Su-ae immediately stood up and pulled me from my seat. She jerked my arm towards the pantry and opened the door silently, crouching while she pulled me down beside her.
She shut the door from the inside and we kneeled uncomfortably on the floor, squeezed together.
We heard footsteps as someone entered the kitchen. Su-ae looked at me, her eyes looking as if they were about to pop out of their sockets and I noticed her jaw shaking a bit.
I hugged her closer to me, if that was even possible with the already close enough proximity.
"Girls...? Are you guys asleep? You left a mess..." A familiar voice called out.
At that moment, Su-ae and I let out the biggest breath of relief in unison. I stood up from the ground and pushed the pantry door open.
"Dad...? We thought that somebody had broken in! Why didn't you say something like, 'I'm home' when you opened the door?" I asked frantically.
"Sorry, I thought that you guys were asleep until I saw the light on," Dad said, yawning.
"Dad, you should go to sleep. Everything is okay, we were just cooking. You don't have to worry about anything," I assured him. I ushered for him to go to his shared room with Mom, who was still standing by the door, sliding off her shoes before leaving them neatly on the rack.
I said goodnight to my parents, Su-ae doing the same.
We returned to the kitchen and started laughing about how scared we were only 2 minutes ago.
"You were shaking and everything!" I teased Su-ae playfully as she sat on the chair next to me, rolling her eyes.
"Yeah, well you were the one hugging me for dear life when we were in there!" She retorted, nodding her head toward the closet.
"I only did that because I didn't want you to be scared!" I admitted to her.
"Okay, fine, fine. It's over now. Can we please talk about something else?" Su-ae begs."What's there to talk about now? We both already know everything there is to know about each other," I told her, picking up a strawberry slice and dropping it onto my tongue.
"Well, what do I not know about you?"
I think about it for a second before ultimately deciding to spill the truth.
"I like Eunhyeok," I blurt. As soon as the words come out of my mouth, I look away and stare at the bowl of strawberries in front of me.
"You... do?" She asks, sounding confused.
I nod to confirm. There's no point in going back on my word now. I look back up and see her staring at me."Wait, don't get me wrong. I don't have a problem with that. I just never thought you liked him. I mean, it wasn't obvious but now that you tell me, I can kind of picture it..." She says, her fingers stroking her chin as she stares up at the ceiling.
"Yeah..." I respond, having no clue what else to say."Wait! If I had known, I wouldn't have asked Eunhyeok to help out with the plan to cheat with me! I'm so sorry, Y/N!" She exclaims. I can tell that she's being sincere.
"You have nothing to apologize for, really. You had no clue that I even liked him. I only recently came to terms with my feelings, so it took some time, but I'm sorry for not telling you," I apologize after I explain.
"It's okay Y/N, I get it," Su-ae looks into my eyes before pulling me in for a side hug. She pulls away and smiles.
The sound of an alarm interrupts the moment and I glance at my phone sitting beside me on the counter, being the source of the ringing noise. The screen reads that the timer is done.
I jump up from my chair excitedly and Su-ae follows behind me. I open the refrigerator door and pick up the cake stand, Su-ae assisting me as I carry it to the dining room table so that it doesn't fall.
"It looks so good!" Su-ae squeals happily.
I run over to the kitchen and pull out one of the drawers that hold the eating utensils, retrieving two forks for the both of us and a cake cutting knife.Su-ae opens a cabinet that holds the plates and bowls, picking up two small plates. We walk back over to the cake together and lay everything out on the table.
I hand the knife over to Su-ae because I can tell that she wants to cut it. She thanks me and I open up the camera app on my phone to record her slicing the cake. She cuts a slice for me and then herself. We sit down in seats opposite of each other on the table and pick up our forks to start eating.
"Wait, this tastes so good! We killed it!" I proclaim, reaching my hand over the table to high five Su-ae. She smacks her hand against mine and we laugh, our mouths full of the sweet crepe cake.
