Rouge sighed as she sat on a lone branch, waiting for the best time to infiltrate the highly secured building and retrieve a pretty-looking gem that had been on her mind recently

usually, she'd spend her Wednesdays talking to knux and/or do her best to steal the large emerald from under his nose, or over his head as many things did

but the echidna and her bestie, slash, his boyfriend had decided to have Wednesdays as their date nights, so schedules had to change

she knew he did that to spite her, but she'd just pick a different day, her calendar was plenty free with how G.U.N operated with mobian spies, they knew to give her space when possible for the fear of getting the trigger-happy shadow to defend her

regardless she was happy for the two, always ready to help them with the romantic stuff as those two were ridiculously bad at it

but tonight it was a date between her,

her gem-

and the mysterious figure that came bolting out of nowhere and into the entrance of the building

...someone had joined in the fun and even cut the queue

now rouge would not be having any of that, no ma'am

ducking down to gain momentum she became airborne and avoided any detection by the security cameras

flying swiftly and above the heads of guards it was kinda pitiful, she almost felt sad

not that she had time to focus on that when she finally reached her destination

but instead of a single beautiful gem ready to grab, she was blocked by the view of a spikey back and curly tail

"hold it right there mister" Rouge scolded as she landed closer to the being, who merely looked over with mesmerising yellow orbs

taking a moment to catalogue her mind, she remembered seeing those eyes before

"wait, I know you, you're one of those detectives, espion right?" she asked as she continued her investigation

"espio" the chameleon corrected with a deadpan stare as he swiftly placed the gem into the seam of a scarf he was wearing, she couldn't place him ever wearing that, was it only for nighttime escapades?

"eh, close enough" Rouge began as she walked closer, almost completely obliterating the barrier between them

"but what's a member of a detective agency doing here and stealing a precious jewel?" she continued as she was ready to poke his chest accusingly, only for her hands to be caught in his

"I'm not stealing, simply retrieving what is rightfully mine" Espio replied as he released the hand and turned to his side to where the platform that was displaying the gem, now being replaced by a similar-sized rock

(fast hands) she couldn't help but think, even the slightest tip of the scales would set it off, it was honestly impressive

"This is your gem ?" rouge questioned, she wished she didn't sound so oblivious

"it's an artefact, I explained to the museum staff, but they did not listen and refused" espio answered

"ah yes, that makes it much better honey" Rouge smirked with a playful wink, something the chameleon found irritating, which simply made her want to do it again

"more honourable than what I suspect you were going to do, for you this holds no merit but simply being "shiny" Espio stated as he tried walking to the exit only for Rouge to quickly block his path once again
