"Knuckles, can I ask you something?" Silver asked as he had regained his breath, training with the guardian was nothing easy
"Sure?" Knuckles asked as he held a bowel to the hedgehog, filled with water to drink
"you've known espio for a while correct?" Silver continued as he took his drink with a thankful nod
"Since we were little yeah" Knuckles replied as he sat down with his own bowl
"OK, so, does he have a tendency to just, speak in a different language?" Silver questioned as he couldn't get the thought out of his mind
"um, not usually, the guy can speak 17 but not just randomly" Knuckles recalled with a shrug
"right, because when we go to sleep he will just say something in a different language and just go to bed, it's really confusing" Silver explained with a chuckle of confusion
"Have you tried asking him?" Knuckles asked, switching roles
"I do, but he just smiles and doesn't answer, like it's a game" Silver sighed, one of the things he loved about espio was his competitive side, he just wished he knew how to join in
"yeah that sounds like him, you tried searching" Knuckles sighed fondly
"like I said, he says them when we're in bed, so I can't, he can be really clingy so-" Silver continued to explain bashfully
"don't need to know what happens then, look I'll give you Tails's translator he left when I was trying to decode some ruined text, it should also be able to detect what esps saying" Knuckles quickly interrupted, before walking over to his hut, retrieving a small yellow device and giving it to the hedgehog
"it won't just shout out the translation will it?" Silver questioned worriedly
"only if you put it on speaker" The guardian shrugged
"perfect, thanks knuckles" Silver exclaimed as he looked forward to testing it
"no problem, now round two!" Knuckles said before jumping into action, preparing for another go
...
when night came silver had the translator ready, placed it under his pillow and got in bed where espio would soon find him
"you're having an early night tonight?" the ninja questioned as he entered the room, closing the door and looking at the hedgehog who was lazily resting his arms against his head
"yeah, well I was with knuckles, the guy knows how to train you to the bone" Silver answered with a big stretch and yawn
"can't argue with that, I just hoped you showered before getting in there" Espio warned lightly
"of course I did!" silver exclaimed happily before reaching out to the chameleon with grabby hands, meaning he wanted to cuddle
"I suppose this means an early night for me too?" the chameleon asked rhetorically
silver merely smiled as the chameleon entered the bed
the silver hedgehog wrapping his partner lovingly as soon as he set one leg in
the two shared a laugh as they got comfortable, face to face but with Silver resting his head against espio's while the chameleon face was using the hedgehog's chest as a pillow, arms and legs holding onto one another, as well as espio's tail around the hedgehog's leg
"Ti amo" espio sighed as he closed his eyes, snuggling as he held the hedgehog closer, seemed like he had a busy day too
silver waited a few moments before using his telekinesis to fish the translator from under the pillow
the dim light highlining the phrase that the chameleon had said
...
"morning" Silver greeted as he heard the kitchen door open
"Good morning to yourself, what are you doing up so early?" Espio asked with confusion, he hadn't expected the hedgehog to wake earlier than him, or even sneaky enough to avoid detection or unlatch his tail without his knowing, he'd need to work on that
"thought I'd get a head start on making breakfast, early to bed, early to wake as it's said" Silver laughed as he looked at the chameleon's surprised face with fondness, it was a trophy in itself when he could surprise the ninja
"Lovely to hear" Espio said as he sat at the table and Silver finished serving their breakfast
silver allowed his beloved to drink his tea before enacting his part in the game
hey, espio? Silver started as he finished chewing his eggy bread
"Yes?" the chameleon replied as he took another sip of his tea
"Ai shiteru" Silver stated confidently
Espio gulped his tea in surprise
"What did you say?" Espio questioned in true surprise and fluster, placing his cup down shakily
"Ai shiteru" Silver repeated, but with a more silky and teasing tone
"ah, heh, where did you?-" Espio began to shakily ask, suddenly feeling exposed
but it only took one look from silver amused eyes to realise that somehow, he had cracked his code
"How did you find out?" Espio sighed sheepishly
silver produced a small translator and placed it on the table
"knuckles after kicking my butt was really nice to give me this helpful little device," the hedgehog said with a cheeky smile
"I can't believe you've been so lovingly cheesy right under my noes, it's adorable" Silver continued as he watched the chameleon scale turn into a lighter shade of pink, a colour he was very fond of
"stop" espio begged, covering his face but Silver could see his smile a mile away
"never" Silver stated as he gently parted the chameleon's hands and booped his muzzle playfully
espio merely shook his head adoringly
"silver?" espio restarted as the hedgehog looked very happy with his win
"yes?" the time traveller cooed, trying to hide his fluster as the chameleon's voice became even lower
"I love you" Espio announced as he reached out for the hedgehog's hand, holding it gently and rubbing the back of his hand with his thumb
"I love you too" Silver sighed heavenly as he lifted their hands together, placing a gentle kiss against his knuckle
