Summary:

Shinichi was walking home after being dragged back from the amusement park after the roller coaster murder. He had seen a suspicious man he wanted to follow, but Ran had not allowed him to run off, ending with him heading home after just notifying the police.

But when arriving in his neighbourhood, he was just in time to see a car drive off between his and Agasa's homes. And where the car had just been, a child stood, alone and confused.

Note:

This is one of two AUs that have come to my mind where Edogawa Conan and Kudo Shinichi are separate people and not related.

The other AU may come out some other time if I'm able to actually write a chap or two of it, and not just some notes.

Hope you enjoy!

Shinichi grumbled in annoyance. He was walking down the street as he had just walked Ran home from their time at the amusement park. After the murder case that had happened, he had seen a suspicious man in black sneak off somewhere and wanted to follow him, but Ran had dragged him back, refusing to let him run off and instead had him inform the police before being forced to leave.

The rain pouring down didn't help either as it blocked most of his sight. As it already was night, the light poles along the street of the neighbourhood was all that was provided for him on his walk back home to the Kudo mansion.

But when walking around the corner, his sharp eyes caught a car driving away from right by his gates before vanishing from his sight. Shinichi didn't have anyone who would come and visit him outside his parents, and they were all away for another long time, like usual. And he was sure Agasa would have said something to him if he would have a guest, as the two talked everyday.

A small figure caught his attention as it moved around in the rain. It was a small boy, and he didn't seem too confident in himself as he looked around, the rain drenching him and the small duffle bag he held in his hand.

"Oi, bozu," called Shinichi, making sure to keep his voice low and as gentle as he could, but ended up making the other flinch either way. Shinichi stepped over to him as he stood between the gates of his and Agasa's home. "You alright? What are you doing out here in the rain."

"U-um... Are you Kudo Shinichi...?" asked the boy, staring up at him, but uncertainty and fear was visible in his eyes, but he seemed skilled enough to hide them from those who didn't need sharp eyes for their jobs.

"I am," confirmed Shinichi with a nod. "Is there something you need, bozu?" The boy wanted to speak, but no words came out from him. The bright blue eyes behind the large glasses glanced down from Shinichi and to the wet road under them again. Shinichi gave an annoyed scowl, but walked to the gate to open it. "Come on, let's go inside where it's dry."

The boy looked up at the call, but nodded and slowly followed the teenage detective into the mansion. Walking inside, Shinichi sighed in relief when feeling the warm air wash over him. Before closing the door, he made sure the boy was in with him as well. With a quick 'wait here' at the other, he strode down the hallway and to the bathroom for some towels.

With towels in hand, he walked back and handed one to the boy and started to dry himself. The downpour outside was not announced by the weathercast earlier that day, so bringing an umbrella hadn't come across his mind. So, all he could do now was get himself dry, and hopefully not get sick, as that would just get in the way for all his cases. One which now involved this child that he still didn't know.
