I park my car and try not to shake. I round the car and open Maya's door first then Lilah's. I help both of them out and take Maya's bag out of the trunk. I give Delilah the keys and she opens the door.
As soon as it pushes open we hear paws clicking on the floor. My princess opens her arms for the stupid dog and he runs straight into them. But slows down a bit so he doesn't crashes into her.
When he decided it was enough love from my daughter he moves onto Delilah. She crouches down in front of him and scratches behind his ear. "Hey Mase."
I roll my eyes at the dog and how much affection he gets both from my girl and and my little girl.
I take everything to the living room and make sure at least it's a little bit appropriate for someone, well not just someone, to be over.
I'm never gonna admit it, but I'm always ashamed of myself when Delilah comes over and there is unwashed dishes, dirty clothes and toys around the house.
Does she ever think I'm a bad dad?
"Ares!" My head snaps to her and look up and down, making sure she's okay. I clear my throat and ignore the heat rushing up on the back of my neck.
"Yeah?" It comes out a little raspy and I mentally slap myself for being flustered.
"Are you okay? You've been starring into nothing for quite a while. I tried calling your name and you weren't responding."
"Yeah, totally okay." I give her what I hope is a reassuring smile, and thankfully she drops the topic. I notice Mase and Maya disappeared, probably into her room.
She sits on the bench in the hallway and tries to unlace her heels. Without thinking, I get on one knee and pop her foot up on my other one.
I look at her like I'm asking for permission. I see her gulp, but she nods. I slowly unhook the straps and pull it off her foot, gently running my fingers down her calf. I do the same with the other, I even switch knees just so we can be close for longer.
When I don't have any other reason to be touching her, I gently place down her feet and stand back up, offering her my hand.
She takes them and I pull her up with a little more strength and she ends up stumbling right into my chest. I wrap my arms around her and she freezes. I pull back just enough to see her face and it's covered in that pretty color of pink that I like.
"Hi." I whisper like an idiot.
Hi? Very original one Ares.
"H-hi." Her breath hitches when my arms tighten around her. I look deep into her eyes, but she's quick to avert hers.
"You looked beautiful tonight." I tell her and tuck a piece of hair behind her ears. "And it must have been a coincidence that we were matching." Her eyebrows furrow and it's only now that she notices what color tie I'm wearing.
