fake it till you make it

"First day of school, I spent all summer with my beautiful girlfriend and I have every class with her; this is going to be a great year." Shawn says wrapping him arm around my shoulders, "What about me? Your best friend." Cory says jealously, "Don't worry Cor, we have some classes together and lunch." Shawn pats his chest.

All of a sudden Cory hides behind the John Adams statue, Shawn and I furrow our eyebrows, "Cory what's this?" Shawn asks, "Uh, John Adams, the founder of our dear school." Cory says avoiding the question. I roll my eyes and turn to walk away instantly seeing his problem; Topanga. I turn back to face him with a smirk, "You're hiding from Topanga, aren't you?" I tease. He steps out from behind the statue, staring at Topanga, "No, I'm not hiding." He says walking to our lockers. "Just, look at her. I thought I missed her over the summer but I miss her even more in person. She's so pretty." He leans against the lockers, "Go say something to her then!" I say "Yeah, you've known her your whole life it shouldn't be that hard." Shawn adds.

Cory shakes his head, "That's not the Topanga I've known. It's like she goes away for the summer and comes back a woman." "We have been over and over and over this. Just go up to her and ask her to go steady." Shawn says, Cory takes a deep breath and freezes, "Am I moving yet?" He asks after a few seconds. I roll my eyes, "This is so sad Cory." I move him away from Shawn and I's locker and put my stuff inside.

All of a sudden I hear Cory say Topanga's name, I turn around and see him awkwardly talking to her, I hold back my chuckles and Shawn does the same. Cory soon comes back, "I don't get it. I talk to you guys just fine but I can't talk to her." He sounds defeated. "Because Shawn is your best friend and I'm Shawn's girlfriend. There is no interest therefore you don't get nervous." I pat his back and walk to Turner's class just as the bell rings.

After Cory's pitiful attempts all day it's finally time to go home.

My dad has a new schedule at work so he's not home until 5 which means Shawn can come over after school, I love spending time with him.

He makes me feel safe.

"Cass, your plan isn't working we have to do something else." Shawn plops down on my bed, "Not my fault Cory is awkward and can't pick up signs." I straddle his waist, "We have to do something. He needs his own girlfriend so he can stop getting jealous when I'm with you." It gets quiet as we think, "I have an idea. We need to fake break up, just in front of Cory." Shawn looks at me like I have six heads, "Hear me out, he thinks we break up; you take Topanga to the movie that Eric is showing, we tell Topanga we're doing this of course. Cory will be so heated he either takes me and Topanga's best friend. You cuddle close with Topanga and Cory will snap and it should work." "That'll feel so wrong in my head, you sure you're okay with me touching her?" He asks, I nod, "I trust you and I know Topanga really likes Cory."

The next day at lunch Cory finally tries to make a move, "Sorry Cor, I'm going with someone else." Topanga says and walks away, "You warned me this would happen." Cory sighs in defeat, "I did." Shawn gloats, "Yeah, you said Topanga looked hot and if I waited too long another guy might move in and he did." Cory groans, "I did." Shawn said. Somehow this killed me despite knowing it was fake, "What do you mean you did?" Cory questions and looks at me, "Yeah, we broke up." I sigh, "When?" He yelps, "Last night. He said Topanga was better for him." I sigh, "You said what?" Cory yelps again, "I did." Shawn repeats, "I can't believe you'd do this to us." Cory defends us, "I-I can't talk to you right now." Cory puts his hand in Shawn's face, "Cass, would you want to go to the movie with me instead?" Cory asks, I gulp before answering; it's for a good cause, "Sure, Cor. I'll meet you here." I answer and he walks away. "I can't believe this worked." I whisper to Shawn, "I know, he's such a fool." Shawn laughs, "See you at your place later?" I ask quietly without looking at him, "Of course." Shawn says, looking away from me. "I so badly want to kiss you right now." He adds on, "Later." I sing and walk out of the cafeteria.

As Shawn and I are making out on his couch, Mr. Turner walks in with Mr. Williams, "Woah!" Turner shouts as we pull off each other, "I did not need to see that." Turner teases as he walks into his kitchen, "Sorry, Mr. Turner." I blush in embrassment. Just then there's a knock at the door, "I'll get it." Shawn says and opens it, "Cory! Hi!" Shawn yells and I run fall behind Mr. Turner's island, "I'm not here!" I whisper as I look up at him, "Okay?" Mr. Turner questions. "Hi Matthews." He says, ignoring my presence under his legs. "Hi." He's short, "What were you thinking, Shawn?" Cory quickly complains to Shawn, "Is this about Topanga?" Shawn groans, "You do not ask out your best friend's girl!" Cory yells, "You asked out Cass right in front of me." Shawn argues, "After I found out you're going out with Topanga!" Cory yells. "This sounds like a violation of the gentlemen's code of dating." Mr. Williams chuckles, "See!" Cory's voice cracks. "On both sides. A true buddy doesn't ask out a girl his friend likes or just broken up with." Mr. Williams lectures, "Right, John?" He asks Mr. Turner. I feel the tension in the room thicken up.

The two teachers begin to have a friendly arguement until Cory cuts them off; typical. "Excuse me, knife in the back here." "All I did was ask out a girl that didn't have a boyfriend." Shawn defends himself, "Which reminds me, I think I'll go call her and confirm our plans." Shawn says and I hear the front door slam. "Cass, you can get up now." Mr. Turner says and his arms cross, "What was that about?" He asks with a smirk, "We have to get Cory his own girlfriend so he leaves Shawn and I alone." I explain, "And how is this helping?" Mr. Williams asks. "Cor asked me to go to the movie with him and he'll see Shawn and Topanga there. Eventually he'll get so angry he'll confess his love to T and me and Shawny can be at peace while they go out. Topanga is all for this." I explain. "Jeez, you kids are something else." Mr. Turner chuckles, "Cass, let me walk you home." Shawn sighs and holds his hand out for me. "Bye Mr. Turner, Mr. Williams." I say, "Bye Cass." They say in sync as Shawn and I leave the apartment.

"Shoot, your dad is home." Shawn says as we stop behind the tree outside of my house, "It's fine." I sigh, "I love you, see you tomorrow." I say quickly giving him a small kiss, "I love you too." Shawn says before hurrying off so my dad doesn't catch us. All Shawn knows is that my dad is mean but he doesn't know that my dad hits me and I hope to keep it this way as long as I live.
