Ivy Matthews
The first thing that I think the morning after the afternoon I spent at Nathan's house is, 'how the hell am I going to finally tell my parents that I needed tutoring but I don't really need it that much anymore and Nathan was just my tutor but now he's more because we are actually going on a date and I'm really excited.' The same thought still plagues my head a week later, distracting me when I'm trying to study, when I'm in class, and most annoyingly; when I'm trying to spend time with Nathan.
We haven't been able to go on our actual date or have any tutoring sessions because he's been working crazy shifts but he still spends time with me and Dylan when we're at school sometimes so it's not like when he practically ghosted me after we kissed in my bedroom for the first time.
"So your date is tonight?" Dylan questions, not hiding her disdain and knocking me from my thoughts.
"Why do you say it like it's a crime?" I shoot back, twirling more spaghetti on my fork.
"Because dates are the start of being shackled into a relationship."
"You go on plenty of dates and aren't shackled into a relationship." I respond with my mouth half full of pasta.
"But you aren't like me, dates for you lead to boyfriends and boyfriends lead to happily ever after and a bunch of babbling babies crawling through Central Park." She lets in a deep inhale after she gets down with her rant and starts twirling some of her pasta on her fork like it never happened, "but your date is tonight, right? Are you gonna tell your parents before you go or once you get back?"
"Yes my date is tonight, it's pretty much all I've been talking about for the last week." I take another bite to distract myself from answering the second question when my only answer right now is the same as it's been for as long as she's been asking it; I don't know.
"You are gonna need to tell them at some point. At some point soon too, you've already been hiding this from them for like, what, 2 months?" Dylan reads through my response delaying bullshit.
"I will, I will, just... after my date. I don't want to take any chances they get super mad at me and don't let me go out, especially when we've been too busy for it the last week. And second of all it's only been like 6 weeks since Nathan started tutoring me."
"They won't get mad, this is Anastasiya and August Matthews we're talking about, they like never get mad."
"You need to help me come up with a plan, I just need to get all my thoughts in order so I don't sound like a brat when I'm telling them."
"Plan is my middle name."
"Your middle name is Hartley, no matter how much you hate it when my brother calls you it."
"I hate you."
"Yeah, yeah love you too. Now, help me!"
The two of us spend the rest of our lunch period barely touching our food and instead brainstorming the best way to tell my parents about Nathan and tutoring that will have the least dramatic fallback. By the time the bell rings for class to start again, we've comprised multiple plans, and now it's up to me to decide which one I want to go with.
