30 minutes later
"Esme Rathe?" A female voice shouts.
Me and Luke look up to see a nurse standing in the open corridor smiling. "Here" I say standing on wobbly feet Luke steadies me not once letting go of me until I'm okay and steady on my feet.
"You okay?" The lady asks me.
I nod. "Yeah, I just got up too fast is all"
"You sure you're okay, baby?" Luke whispers in my ear.
I nod giving him a small smile before pushing Esme towards the lady. "Follow me" she tells us.
Following her we walk down a long corridor. "Just in here, please" she gestures to the door.
Luke pushes the door open and I push esme's pram in. There sat in a chair behind a desk is oldish fella about my dads age he looks up noticing he has company. "Hello, I'm Dr. Weiser, you must be Esme's parents?" He asks holding out his hand for us to shake.
We nod reaching out shaking his hand. "Hi, I'm Helen and this is my fiance Luke" letting go luke shakes the doctors hand.
"Pleased to meet you both, please take a seat I'm just going over Esme's referral" Dr Weiser smiles. "So I believe she failed her newborn hearing screening?"
I nod.
"I see" he smiles warmly. "What is she like day to day? What is she like with loud sounds?"
"She doesn't flinch, hoover, banging doors—even our nephews loud screeches doesn't even phase her" I tell him.
"Okay, well we'll do a hearing test today, see what we're working with and go from there—okay?" Dr Weiser smiles.
Luke reached over to me taking my hand in his and squeezes it.
"Can one of you hold her whilst we do the testing, please?" The nurse asks as the dr prepares the machine.
I look to Luke and he stands getting our little girl out of her car seat and hands her to me. "Hey there, pretty girl" I coo as she's placed in my arms.
"Okay, this is just to test how well Esme's eardrum moves" Dr Weiser mentions as he holds a small remote looking device with what looks like the rubber end of a earphone. "It's going to blow a little bit of air in her ear but try and keep her still as possible, please"
I hold Esme as still as I possibly can as he performs the test on her. "Okay, that's fine. I'm going to perform one more test on her and then we'll discuss what we've found today" Dr Weiser smiles warmly.
"Okay" I murmur reaching for Luke's hand once more.
"This will send sounds down Esme's ear and it will transmit the signal back to this machine, this will tell us if there is any hearing loss or anything else" Dr. Weiser informs us as he places the probes in Esme's ears.
We're quiet whilst the test is done, it feels like a lifetime but once he's done he sits and examines the results. My nerves are shot waiting for him to face us and tell us what the results are, though I've got a feeling what he's going to say.
I think my little girl is deaf...
Finally Dr. Weiser turns and he looks frustrated. "I'm sorry before I say anything and I apologise for this, but I'd like to do one more test and maybe some bloods or saliva?" He tells us.
Why bloods or saliva?
"Why bloods or saliva?" Luke asks him.
"I'm just trying to rule out things, but I'd also like to an ABR test on Esme" dr. weiser tells us. "An ABR is an auditory brain stem response, it's painless and it tells us how the hearing nerves and the brain respond to sounds" he adds.
