"What's wrong, son?" Saint asks me for the sixth fucking time this morning.
"Nothing" I growl.
"Now I'd believe that but I've just seen you kick the shit out of that fucking printer—so I'm gonna ask you again, what's wrong?" he asks concernedly.
I sigh heavily trying to keep my shit together and not bawl out like a baby. "We haven't told anyone this but Esme could be deaf," I tell him.
"I know, son," he tells me.
"How did you—Layla" I scoff. "Why didn't you say anything?"
"Honestly? I was waiting for you to tell me, son" he says slapping my back as he walks to his seat. "And as much as it wasn't her place to say anything, don't be mad at your sister, she's just worried about all of you"
"I know," I tell him and I make a mental note to call my little sister when I finish my shift when my phone rings looking at the caller ID I see it's my beauty calling not just her name but a beautiful picture of her and Esme as her contact picture so every time she rings me that picture comes up. It's my screen picture too like so...
"Hey baby" I smile.
"Hey, um—is there any chance you can get off work for a couple of hours?" Helen asks me.
"Why what's wrong?" I ask her getting worried.
"Dr Weiser's just rang he wants us to come in now," she tells me.
"Can you cover for me whilst I go Alderhey with Helen and Esme?" I ask Saint.
"Like you even need to ask," he tells me.
"Thanks, man," I tell Saint. "I'm leaving now baby, I'll pick you guys up on the way don't even think about driving Helen," I tell my woman knowing she's more than likely upset and I don't want her driving upset.
"Okay, we love you," she tells me.
My eyes close from her words. "I love you's more than you'll ever know, I'll see you soon" I say before ending the call.
"Are you gonna be okay driving?" Saint asks me.
"Yeah," I tell him. "That's bad news, right? If he is calling us in without an appointment? It's only been three days"
"Son, take a deep breath and listen to me" Saint growls. "Worst of the worst—Esme is deaf and needs help does that mean you'll love her any less?"
"Fuck no," I tell him.
"Exactly, besides if she is she'll get the best help for her and she's got you and Helen as her parents not to mention a kick-ass family surrounding you all," he tells me. "Now go get your girls, be strong, you got this"
"Thanks, Saint," I say as I hug him tightly he stiffens at first but then his arms come around me squeezing me tightly and then he's patting me on my back.
"Go on, son," he says with a chin lift.
I don't need to be told twice as I leave the building in a rush to get to my girls. Not giving an ounce of a fuck I put my police lights and siren on to get home quicker and see that Helen is already coming out of the front door I turn the siren and lights off. "What are you doin, baby?" I say jumping out of my car and leaving the engine running.
"I heard you coming so figured I might as well come out," she tells me as she passes me our girl who is currently wide awake in her car seat.
"Hey beautiful, where's daddy's little girl?" I coo to my baby girl who just stares at me like I'm nuts.
