"I can't believe we're having a girl" Helen says excitedly as we leave the hospital hand in hand.
I look at her, taking in her beautiful face as it's lit up with pure happiness...
Fucking beautiful...
"She's gonna have me wrapped around her little finger, just like her mummy does" I tease tapping my index finger on the tip of her cute little nose.
"That's the way it should be" she teases back with a wink.
I chuckle at my girl and kiss her softly against her lips. "So—who're we telling first?" I ask her as we approach my car.
"Grams?" Helen says hesitantly.
My eyebrows rise. "You're sure?"
She nods pursing her lips. "She's the oldest in the family, and my only living grandparent" she tells me as I open the passenger door on my car for her. "Besides I think it would get you in her good books"
"Good thinking, Batman" I chuckle.
She rolls her eyes at me before getting in the car, running back around to the drivers seat when I feel the hairs on the back of my neck start to stand up, that feeling when it feels like someone is watching you. I look behind me back at the hospital entrance and there stood in the doorway is Ronnie with his arms around a woman in a midwife uniform and his hands on her arse.
Helen looks to where I'm looking and tuts. "Jesus Christ, Suzanne" she mutters.
Suzanne?
"Whose suzanne?" I ask my girl as I get in the car.
"One of the midwives" Helen replies typing out a message on her phone. "She's newish to our team"
I turn my head back towards Ronnie and Suzanne, but she isn't with Ronnie anymore, he's stood at the entrance looking at me. "He's a strange fella aswell" my girl mutters as she looks from me to where Ronnie is.
My stomach drops at her words. "You've met him before?" I ask her.
She shrugs before nodding. "A few times, yeah"
"What made you say he was strange?" I ask her. "Has he done anything?"
"No, he's okay—I mean he was always polite when he came to see Suzanne, but lately—" she says.
"Lately?" I question.
"He's just been a bit weird lately" she tells me. "I feel like he's always there—watching me" she says with a shudder.
What. The. Fuck?
I try to keep my shit together and look back over at the entrance to see that Ronnie isn't at the entrance anymore.
"Babe? Are you okay?" Helen asks me.
I look back at my girl who is looking at me with a face of concern. I force a smile on my face. "Fine, baby" I say.
She snort laughs humourlessly. "I'd believe you but the tight grip you've got on the wheel tells me something different" she says as she gestures to the steering wheel.
Looking down to the wheel by hands are clenched around the wheel so tight that my knuckles look like they're close to ripping through my skin. "Let's go see grams, eh?" I say with another forced smile on my face before pulling away from the parking space on to the main road.
The drive to her grams place is silent between us both, apart from Capital Fm playing on the radio, I can't stand the fact that I've upset my woman by not opening up to her. But what the fuck can I do? It's a fucking police investigation. Not to mention, I don't want her knowing that someone she's working with is seeing a murder suspect. Though I should tell her something...
