Chapter 2: Brave New World

Ava's at school near Jeremy's locker and she hands him a vervain bracelet and she says, "It's the same bracelet Elena gave you." Jeremy says, "So, it protects me from compulsion." Ava says, "Vervain is toxic to vampires." Jeremy says, "You mean like poison?" Ava says, "Yeah. It's very poisonous. It'll keep them out of your head." Jeremy says, "But why vervain?" Ava says, "I don't know. Certain natural herbs and roots and other elements are just harmful to vampires." Jeremy says, "Like a stake to the heart?" Ava says, "Right, but it has to be wood." Jeremy says, "You're pretty confident in yourself telling me all the different ways I could kill you." Ava chuckles and says, "Jeremy, if I thought you wanted to kill me, we'd be having a much different conversation, okay." Jeremy says, "Yeah. Damon is the one that deserves it." Ava says, "I want you to try and forget about Damon, alright? He's a hundred times stronger than you and right now, he's not stable. You have to try to move forward." Jeremy says, "I was killed by a vampire and brought back by a magic ring. How do you move forward from that?" Ava says, "Right. Well, today we have a nice little distraction courtesy of slave driver Elena." Just as Ava says that, Elena walks up to them and Ava looks at Elena and says, "Hello, Elena." Elena says, "Hey. Um, do you--" Jeremy cuts Elena off and says, "Yeah, yeah, I set up the goldfish toss all 300 goldfish. It's gonna be epic." Jeremy closes his locker, and he walks away. Elena leans up against the locker with a sigh and Ava says, "He's gonna be alright. He's just been through, uh a little bit of an ordeal." Elena says, "I was just hoping that this carnival would reel him back into the land of high school teenager." Ava says, "Oh, is that what we're doing here?" Elena says, "Yes. We all are. We're gonna be boring high school students who live in a world where the "V" word is not uttered." Ava says, "Got it." Elena says, "And then later you're gonna take me to the Ferris wheel we're gonna ride to the very top. Then you're gonna kiss me and my heart will flutter like a normal high school girl. Do you see a running theme here?" Ava says, "Yeah. No, I'm seeing it, I'm liking it, but I have a quick question. Um, what do we do about Damon?" Elena holds up her finger and says, "Uh, no "D" word, okay? That has been deleted from the list of topics that we can discuss." Ava says, "Unfortunately, Katherine showing up has him in a little bit of an odd place little off-kilter, kind of dangerous. Who knows what he's up to?" Elena sighs knowing Ava's worried about Damon. Later, Ava walks into the living room of her home to see Damon pouring blood into a cup and Damon looks up at her and he says, "Would you care for one?" Ava says, "No, thank you. I'm not hungry. Just ate." Damon says, "Aren't you worried that one day all the forest animals are gonna band together and fight back? I mean, surely they talk." Ava says, "I'm just happy that's a, uh... a blood bag and not a sorority girl supplying your dinner." Damon says, "I like this. You walking on eggshells around me because you think I'm gonna explode. It's very suspenseful. Is Elena worried, too? I bet I'm your every conversation." Ava says, "Have you heard from Katherine?" Damon says, "I think the Lockwoods have a family secret because the Gilbert device affected them, but the vervain didn't, so they're not vampires. They're something else." Ava says, "So, is this your new obsession?" Damon says, "Oh, you'd rather some unknown supernatural element running rampant in our town, fine. I'll drop it." Ava says, "We haven't seen the last of Katherine. You do know that, right? We have no idea what she's up to." Damon says, "Pfft, sure, we do. She came back to profess her undying, eternal love for you. So, I'm gonna let you deal with her. 'Cause I have more important things to do. Like explode. Cheers." Damon walks away. Later, Ava's at the carnival and she walks up to Damon who's watching Tyler having an arm wrestle competition. Ava crosses her arms, and she says, "Wow. You're lurking." Damon glances at Ava and he says, "I'm observing." Ava says, "More like obsessing." Tyler wins and the crowd cheers. Damon says, "He's got strength." Ava says, "He's a triple-letter varsity athlete. Of course, he has strength. You're reaching." Then Mason walks over to Tyler and says, "I bet I can take you." Damon says, "Enter the uncle." Tyler says, "Bring it on, surfer boy." Ava says, "This is ridiculous." The bell rings and Mason beats Tyler. Tyler says, "Alright, he's the champ. Who wants to go next?" Damon says, "Uh, Avangeline wants to go." Ava glares at Damon and says, "Sure. I'll give it a shot." Ava walks up to the table and Damon says, "Go, Aves. Get him, Aves." Ava looks at Mason and Mason says, "You sure you wanna do this sweetheart, I might hurt you." Ava smiles and says, "Yeah, I'm sure. Also, don't call me sweetheart. Anyway, my brother over there thinks I can beat you." Ava grabs Mason's hand and Mason says, "You brother's definitely wrong. Well, since you're a girl." The bell dings and Ava thinks she's gonna beat Mason, but to her shock Mason beats her with his strength. Ava walks up to Damon, and he says, "You didn't put in any effort at all." Ava says, "Actually, I did." Damon says, "Come with me." They walk away and Damon says, "Is he--?" Ava cuts Damon off and says, "No. It wasn't that kind of strength, but it was more than human if that makes any sense." Damon says, "What is up with that family? If they're not vampires, then what the hell are they?" Ava says, "Ooh. Uh, maybe they're Ninja Turtles." Damon says, "You're not funny." Ava says, "Or, no, zombies. Werewolves." Damon says, "No comedic timing at all." Damon looks over a someone and Ava says, "What are you up to?" Damon says, "Since, this is reality and there's no such thing as werewolves or combat turtles." Ava says, "Hey, people say that about us, but maybe they're werewolves out there just roaming around." Damon says, "I'm ignoring you now." Damon walks up to someone and says, "Hey, you." The guy says, "I have a name." Damon says, "Yeah, I don't care." The guy says, "What--" Damon grabs the man's shoulders and compels him, "I need you to pick a fight with someone. Kid named Tyler Lockwood." Ava says, "Damon, don't do this." Damon waves off Ava and says, "No, no. It's just an experiment. Get him mad. Don't back down, no matter what he does, okay?" The guy says, "I won't back down." Damon says, "I know you won't." The guy walks away, and Ava looks at Damon and she says, "You do realize somebody's gonna get hurt, right?" Damon says, "No, someone's gonna get mad, as in rage." Ava says, "And what's that gonna accomplish?" Damon says, "That Tyler kid is incapable of walking away from a fight. Let's see who wins. Maybe it's the ambiguously supernatural mystery uncle." Damon walks away. Later, Ava goes to follow Tyler and she watches how the guy that Damon compelled bumped into Tyler and them the guy pushes Tyler a few times and then punches him in the face. They then get into a fight and Mason rushes over to break up the fight. Mason then grabs the guy by his neck and the guy punches Mason and pushes him into a car. The guy then grabs Tyler and tosses him into a car. Ava watches in awe at how Mason jumps across the cars and then jumps very high over the guy and she watches as his eyes change to a gold color. Then Mason punches the guy and he falls down to the ground. Mason and Tyler walk away and Ava rushes over to the guy and she crouches down and says, "You alright, man?" The guy says, "Why did I just do that?" Ava says, "You were just in the wrong place at the wrong time." Later, Ava's in a classroom with Elena and Damon because Damon told them about how Caroline's a vampire. Ava says, "How did this happen?" Damon says, "Well, I fed her blood and Katherine obviously killed her. And A plus B equals--" Elena cuts him off and says, "But why?" Damon says, "Because Katherine is a manipulative nasty little slut." Ava says, "And she said, "Game on?" I mean, what does that even mean?" Damon says, "It means she's playing dirty. She wants us to know." Elena says, "But why Caroline?" Damon says, "I don't know." Ava says, "Caroline must be completely out of her mind. She has no idea what's happening to her." Damon says, "Oh, I think she does. All of my compulsion from the past started wearing off the minute she was in transition." Ava says, "We have to find her." Damon says, "Yep, and kill her." Elena says, "You're not gonna kill Caroline." Damon says, "She knows who we are. She's officially a liability. We have to get rid of her." Ava says, "Damon, absolutely not." Damon says, "Need I remind you of a tragic little story of girl named Vicki Donovan? Yeah, Caroline, of all people will not make it as a vampire. Her mother's a vampire hunter. Guys, come on. We all know how this story ends. So, let's just flip to the last chapter and--" Elena cuts Damon off and says, "It's not an option, Damon." Damon says, "No?" Damon looks at Ava and says, "Your silence is deafening, Ava. Wait, wasn't there a school carnival the night you staked Vicki? Talk about a town where history repeats itself. You know I'm right." Ava walks up to Damon and gets into his face and says, "We're not gonna kill her." Ava walks out the room with Elena right behind her. Later, as Ava and Elena are walking around the carnival looking for Caroline, Elena says, "You agree with Damon, don't you? Ava." Ava punches a booth, and she walks past the booth and Elena says, "Ava. Hey." Ava says, "Damon's right, not about what we should do but about what's gonna happen. Katherine all but signed Caroline's death sentence." Elena says, "Well, we can't let it end that way. She's doing this to me, isn't she?" Ava shakes her head and says, "Actually, she's doing it to me." Moments later, Ava and Elena still haven't found Caroline and Elena says, "Where could she be?" Ava stops walking when she smells something and Elena says, "What is it? Do you hear her? What's going on, Ava? What is it?" Ava says, "It's blood. I can smell blood." Ava follows the smell of blood and Elena follows after her girlfriend. Ava speeds over to Damon just as he's about to kill Caroline and she pushes him off of Caroline. Elena goes to Caroline and Carolien yells, "Get away from me! You killed me." Elena says, "No, no, no, no, Caroline. That wasn't me. You know that. That was Katherine." Caroline cries, "No! Then why does she look like you? And why? Why did she do this to me?" Elena looks at Ava and says, "Ava, we gave to get her inside." Ava looks back at Caroline and she softly says, "It's alright, Caroline. Come with me." Ava grabs Caroline's hand and Damon says, "She will die. It's only a matter of time." Ava says, "Yeah, maybe so, but it's not gonna happen tonight." Damon says, "Yeah, it is." As Damon speeds over to Caroline to kill her, Ava speeds in front of Caroline. Damon halts his movements glaring at his sister. Ava says, "No, Damon." Damon puts the stake down and says, "Whatever happens, it's on you." Damon speeds away. Ava looks at Elena and says, "We've got to get her cleaned up." Ava then sees Bonnie and Bonnie says, "Caroline? Oh. You're not. You can't, you can't be." Bonnie walks up to Caroline and Caroline says, "Bonnie." Bonnie shakes her head tears pooling in her eyes and she walks past Caroline and Caroline says, "Oh, God. Bonnie." Ava tugs on Caroline's hand and she takes her to the bathroom to get cleaned up. As Caroline cries with tears rolling down her cheeks, Ava grabs papers towels and she wets them and she wipes the blood off of Caroline's mouth. Caroline cries, "She hates me. Bonnie hates me." Ava says, "No, no, no. She's just in shock. We all are, okay?" Caroline cries, "And what about Matt? What am I gonna do about Matt?" Ava softly says, "Shh. One thing at a time. Let's just get this blood cleaned off. Come on." Caroline cries, "I'm a murder, and I'm a monster." Ava says, "Listen to me. Your emptions are heightened right now. It's part of the transformation. It's completely normal. I promise you. Alright?" Caroline cries, "Ahh! Why does this keep happening to my face?" Caroline covers her face, and she cries, "I'm, they're hideous." Ava says, "Caroline, look at me. Look at me. Look at me. Look at me! Look at my face." Just as Caroline opens her eyes, she watches as Ava's eyes changes like hers. Ava says, "You see that?" Caroline nods and says, "Yeah." Ava says, "When you feel the blood rush in you tell yourself that you're gonna get through it that you're strong enough." Caroline sobs and she shakes her head. Ava places her hands gently on Caroline's and she says, "Yes. Yes. No matter how good it feels to give yourself over it you fight it off, you bury it. Watch me. Watch me. That's the only way you're gonna survive this thing. Try it. Shh. Try it. There you go. That's good." Caroline's eyes go back to normal, and Caroline says, "Why did Katherine do this to me?" Ava softly says, "I don't know. I wish I did. Hey, I promise you... I will not let anything happen to you. Come here." Ava brings Caroline in for a hug, and she rubs her back. Later, Ava walks over to Elena who's at her locker and she softly says, "Hey. Caroline is okay for now. I'm gonna check in on her later." Elena says, "What about the guy that she--" Ava cuts her off with a sigh and says, "It's taken care of." Elena says, "Damon's right. Isn't he? It won't end well for her." Ava says, "No, I'm gonna make sure that he's wrong." Elena says, "I just, I can't believe what this day has turned into." Ava sighs and says, "Not your normal day, huh?" Elena rubs her neck and says, "Mm-mm. I was stupid to think that it could be. I mean, nothing about my life is normal. My best friend is a witch. My girlfriend's a vampire and... I have a doppelganger who's hellbent on destroying all of us." Ava softly says, "I'm sorry." Elena says, "No, it's not your fault, Ava. It's no one's fault, you know. It is what it is. I'm fine. It's just... You know what? I'm fine. Okay, I'm, uh... I'm gonna call you tomorrow, okay? Goodnight, Ava." Elena kisses Ava's cheek and she walks away. Later, Ava's at Elena's and she opens her window, and she walks through and walks up to Elena and she gently kisses Elena's forehead. Elena stirs awake and she says, "Mmm. Hi. What time is it?" Ava says, "It's almost dawn. Come with me." Later, Ava brough Elena to the carnival and Elena says, "Ava, what are we doing here? We're gonna get caught." Ava brings Elena over to the Ferris Wheel and she says, "Well, I compelled the guard to go on break so I could kiss my girlfriend on top of the Ferris Wheel." Elena says, "Ava..." Ava says, "We have to take these moments, Elena. Alright? What Katherine did to Caroline could just be the beginning and then there's things with Tyler's family that we don't even understand yet. Then there's always the "D" word, but... I came back to this town to start a life with you. We can't forget to live it." Ava brushes her thumb against Elena's cheek and Elena smiles and leans into Ava's hand. Elena says, "How are we gonna get to the top?" Ava says, "I guess you'll just have to hold on tight." Ava wraps her arms around Elena and she flies then to the top and they sit in the carriage and Elena laughs. Ava smiles lovingly at Elena and Elena smiles and says, "What?" Ava says, "It's just so nice to see you laugh." Elena then pulls Ava into a kiss and then she pulls away and says, "It's not gonna get any easier, is it?" Ava sighs and she shakes her head softly saying, "No. It's not."
