Chapter 17: Know Thy Enemy

At the Salvatore house, Ava's walking down the stairs with Damon and she says, "Isobel just showed up at their front doorstep." Damon says, "What's she doing here?" Ava says, "I don't know. That's what I'm gonna go find out." As they make it down the stairs, Katherine appears and says, "I don't think you should tell her that I'm here." Ava says, "What? Why?" Katherine says, "It's better if she and John not know that I stayed in town after I got out of the tomb." Damon says, "You're the one in cahoots with them. You made a deal with John that almost got me killed." Katherine says, "I did what I had to get out of the tomb. Now I'm reconsidering my alliance." As Katherine turns away, Ava says, "What do you know?" Katherine turns around and says, "I know that I want Klaus dead which puts me squarely on team you. Besides, if you two ever need me to swap places with Elena again the less people know that I'm here, the better. Think about it, Ava. Come on, be smart." Ava nods and looks at Damon and says, "Tell you what? Why don't you, uh... call Alaric and let him know that his wife just showed up on his girlfriend's doorstep." Ava grabs her jacket and heads out the door. Later, as Ava's at Elena's walking upstairs as she's on the phone with Caroline. Caroline says, "I can't find him anywhere. He's not at home. He's not answering his phone." Ava says, "How could you let him go?" Caroline says, "My mom walked in and he just took off. I don't know what to do?" Ava says, "Did your mom hear anything?" Caroline says, "No, she just thinks we're fighting, but he knows about me and he's freaking out about Vicki." Ava says, "Alright, listen, you have to find him. You have to calm him down. Compel him if you have to. Is he still on the vervain?" Caroline says, "I slip it into his soda when he's at work but I didn't get to last night, so it's out of his system. He has a catering shift at the Lockwood's today. I'm gonna try there." Caroline hangs up just as Ava walks into Elena's room. Ava sits down next to Elena as Elena says, "This is bad between Isobel and Jenna and now Matt. This is disaster bad." Ava nods and says, "Yeah." John walks into the room and he says, "Elena, can you come downstairs, please? I need to talk to you." Elena scoffs and says, "I have nothing to say to you." John says, "Please. It's important. You too, Ava." The couple walk downstairs with John behind them, and they see Isobel. Isobel says, "I asked John for a do-over." Elena looks at John and says, "You invited her in?" John says, "She has information about Klaus. Please, just listen to her, okay?" Ava nods and says, "Alright. What do you know?" Isobel says, "Since I was last here, I've been doing everything possible to find Klaus. We knew our best chance was to find him before he could find you." Ava says, "Best chance at what?" John says, "Keeping Elena alive." Elena glares at John and says, "You don't get to talk, okay? Not after everything you've done." Ava looks at Isobel and says, "Were you able to find Klaus?" Isobel says, "No. Nobody knows where he is. But there are these rumors that are flying around that a doppelganger exists." John says, "Which means any vampire that wants to get in favor with Klaus will be lining up to capture you." Elena says, "I'm not buying any of this. The last time that you were here, you made it clear that you didn't give a damn about me. Now all of a sudden, I'm supposed to believe that you want to help?" John says, "Isobel's been helping all along. Klaus has been obsessed with finding Katherine for centuries. All it would take was any one of those 1864 tomb vampires to spread the word around that Katherine was still alive and it would bring him straight here to Mystic Falls where you were bound to be discovered. So, we killed them." Elena says, "And almost killed Ava and Damon in the process." John says, "Yeah." Isobel says, "I have a safe house that I can take you to. The deed is in your name. No vampires can get in without your permission. Not even me. Let me help you." Elena says, "You wanna help? Then get the hell out of my house." Later, Ava and Elena are at the boarding house and are sitting in the living room with Damon. Elena looks at Ava and says, "Do you really think that Isobel's telling the truth that word's gotten out about the doppelganger?" Ava says, "Look, I don't trust a word that she says, but... I think we'd be stupid to ignore the warning." Damon says, "You know, you should just stay here. It's better for us to keep an eye on you." Ava says, "What? In the house that any vampire can enter? No! Her house is safer." Damon says, "Well, then we'll stay there." Elena says, "So, is that the plan? Neither of you will let me out of your sight again?" Damon says, "Let me know when you come up with a better one." Elena says, "Fine. Then one of you two bodyguards is gonna have to come with me to the Lockwood luncheon." Ava smiles at Elena and says, "That'd be me." Damon says, "Not me. I have witch stuff to attend to with Bonnie." Elena looks at Damon and says, "Does that mean that you're taking her to the..." Damon puts his finger on his lips to quiet her. Katherine walks in and says, "Don't get quiet on my account. If you have a plan to combat the impending vampire doom... please do tell. Seriously. What is the plan to get us out of this mess, hmm? I delivered you a moonstone, a werewolf, and the dagger to lure and kill Klaus and right now all you have is a moonstone, or so you tell me." Damon says, "No, we have it." Katherine looks at Damon and says, "Where is it?" Damon says, "It's in a very safe place." Katherine says, "I've been honest with you. Time to return the favor." Damon says, "Let me be honest with you, don't mistake the fact that we haven't set you on fire in your sleep for trust." Katherine says, "Fine. Be that way." Katherine walks out the room. Later, Ava and Elena are at the Lockwood luncheon and Caroline walks up to them. Ava says, "Hey. Any luck finding Matt?" Caroline says, "None. What if he tells somebody? What if he tells everybody?" Ava says, "No, we just got to find him and make sure that doesn't happen." Ava looks at Elena and says, "Do you have any idea where he would be?" Elena says, "I wish I did, but he wasn't really one to run." Caroline says, "You know, this wasn't how it was supposed to happen. You know, I was supposed to tell him at the right moment in the right way, and he was supposed to be okay with it because he loves me." Elena says, "We'll help you find him. I just have to accept this thing for Jenna." Caroline says, "Alright, well, call me when you're done, and I'll be out looking for him." Caroline walks way. Ava sighs rubbing Elena's back and says, "Maybe he'll come around. You did." Elena softly smiles and leans her head against Ava's. Later, Ava and Elena are in the main room with everyone else as Mrs. Lockwood says, "And here to accept the donation to the Miranda Sommers-Gilbert Scholarship Fund is Elena Gilbert." The crowd claps as Ava smiles at Elena. Elena smiles and accepts the envelope. Elena says, "The Historical Society was my mom's baby. She considered all of you family and would be honored and touched by this gift." Ava hears a thud and she looks over as everyone else does to see a body rolling down the stairs and that body is John's. Ava rushes over to John and crouches down. Ava sees the side of his neck to see his neck was bitten into by a vampire. Mrs. Lockwood says, "Please, let the sheriff do her job." Sheriff Forbes walks over and Ava looks at her and says, "Uh, he's, uh, he's bleeding. Is he okay?" Sheriff Forbes says, "Yeah, I got it. I got it." Ava says, "Okay." Ava lets the Sheriff handled it as she looks around for Elena. Ava goes back into the main room, and she says, "Elena. Elena." Ava finds Elena on the phone, and she says, "You okay?" Elena says, "I'm calling Damon." Ava says, "Let's get out of here. Come on." Ava guides Elena out of the house. As they leave the house, Elena's on the phone with Damon. Elena says, "It's Isobel Damon. It's got to be." Ava says, "Tell him he needs to get over here and deal with John's body." Elena says, "You've got some serious explaining to do to the council about John being not so dead." Elena hangs up and Ava realizes that this isn't Elena and that it's Katherine. Ava pushes Katherine against the car and angrily says, "Where the hell is she, huh?" Katherine injects Ava and she groans. Katherine says, "I'm sorry, Aves, but I can't have you following me." Katherine tosses Ava into the bushes. Later, Ava's with Damon as they arrive outside of the house that Isobel's been staying in. They get out of the car as Ava says, "You think this is the house?" Damon says, "It better be. It's the nicest foreclosure in town." Ava says, "Swear to God if she's not here..." Damon says, "Don't be such a pessimist." The two walk into the house as Avasays, "I got upstairs." Ava checks upstairs and searches the entire place not finding anything before going back downstairs as Damon looks at two bags of luggage and says, "This is Isobel's stuff. It's definitely the right place." Ava says, "Where are they?" Damon says, "I don't know, Ava." The two walk out of the house.

Later, Ava's at the boarding house with Elena, she sees Elena holding up a necklace and she says, "Is that Isobel's?" Elena nods and says, "I never thought I would feel bad about her being dead and yet..." Ava says, "She was your mother." Elena nods and says, "Why did they let me go?" Ava says, "Well, anything that John told Isobel, we have to assume that Klaus knows, right? So, he knows that you're not gonna turn yourself into a vampire, he knows that you have us keeping you safe." Elena says, "He knows I'm not gonna run." Damon walks in and says, "Which is why we need to take some precautions. Because we got played. All of us." Damon places down the deed to the house on the table and Elena says, "What's this?" Ava says, "It's the deed to our house. It's in Zach's name. As soon as you sign it..." Damon says, "It'll be in your name." Elena says, "You're giving me your house?" Ava says, "Isobel had the right idea with the safe house. You'll just stay here till it's all over. That way you can control who gets invited and who doesn't." Damon says, "Although, I'll be super pissed if you lock me out." Elena scoffs. Then John gasps awake and Damon speeds over to John and hoists him in the air. John says, "I swear I had no idea what she was gonna do. I'm sorry." John looks over at Elena and says, "I'm so, so sorry." Elena says, "Damon, let him go. He and I need to talk." Later, while Elena and John are having a private conversation, Ava and Damon are in the study as Ava pours herself a drink. Damon says, "Hey, Bonnie said the spell worked. She's locked and loaded." Ava says, "At least something went right today." Ava drinks her drink, and she says, "Hmm. Katherine has no idea that Bonnie got her powers back." Damon shakes his head and says, "Mnh-mnh." Ava says, "And Isobel had no idea what you and Jeremy took Bonnie to do today." Ava hands Damon a drink and he says, "Unh-unh." Ava says, "We're the only ones who know." Damon says, "That literally makes Bonnie our secret weapon." They cheers and drink.
