Chapter 5: Kill or Be Killed

Ava goes to see Elena and she sneaks into Elena's room just as Elena walks in and Elena gasps when she sees Ava. Ava chuckles and she says, "Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." As Ava goes to kiss Elena, Elena holds up her finger and she goes to close the door and then Elena grabs Ava's face and pulls her into a kiss. Elena pulls away with a smile and she says, "Hi." Elena hugs Ava and Ava says, "Hi." Elena sighs and Ava says, "You ready for today?" Elena shakes her head and says, "No. I... I hate fighting with you, even if it's fake." Ava pulls away from the hug and says, "I know, but if Katherine thinks we're fighting then she'll think she's winning and that keeps her from following through on her threats." Elena says, "Yeah, well, that doesn't make it any easier. Neither does knowing that Caroline will be there reporting everything back to her." Ava softly says, "Hey. Everything's gonna be okay. Yes, we have to... keep up this ruse for a little while but it's the best way to keep Katherine from hurting anybody. From hurting you." Elena says, "Just promise me that she won't get away with this. We can fake a fight, we can... pretend that her threats are tearing us apart. But none of its real. Okay." Ava says, "Okay. How about this? Today, when we're fighting if I say, "I can't do this anymore, Elena." What I'll really mean is that I love you." Elena smiles and Elena says, "And when I say, "Fine, Ava, whatever." It really means I love you, too." Ava smiles and says, "Deal." Elena smiles and Ava pulls Elena into a kiss by grabbing her face. Later, Ava's at the Mystic Falls Historical Society volunteer day. Ava sees Mason and she walks up to him and Mason says, "Ava, right? The other Salvatore." Ava gives a small smile and says, "The nice one." Mason says, "Hm." Ava says, "The one offering an apology." Mason says, "Not interested." Ava says, "Look, my brother acted impulsively." Mason says, "You think?" Ava says, "If you and Damon keep at each other's throats... somebody innocent is going to get hurt and I don't want that. And you have family here, so I can't imagine you'd want that, either. So, what do you say, we just, uh quit the whole alpha-male fighting thing and just... call it a truce." Mason says, "He turned it down. With a knife." Ava says, "He made a mistake. I'm here to make sure that neither one of you make another one." Mason says, "Tell your brother to watch his back." As Mason walks away, Ava grabs his arm stopping him and she says, "Well, I'm guessing that he only has to worry about that during a full moon. Otherwise, you're not as strong. Am I right? Or you would have killed Damon by now. There's one of you. There's two of us. Aren't you the one that needs to watch his back?" Mason says, "If he comes at me..." Ava says, "He won't." Ava has her hand out to make a truce with Mason and Mason grabs Ava's hand only he doesn't shake it he kisses it, and Ava rolls her eyes. Mason walks away and Damon appears behind Ava, and he says, "What are you doing?" Ava says, "Negotiating peace on your behalf." Damon says, "I don't want peace." Ava says, "Consider it opposite day." Damon says, "Avangeline... please tell me you don't seriously think the kiss on your hand just solved our problem." Ava says, "No, actually, I think that the first chance Mason Lockwood gets he's going to drive a stake through your heart and then, through mine. All because you took it upon yourself to try to kill him. So, thank you. Because we don't have enough problems." Ava walks away. Later, Ava's working on measuring some wood when she feels someone staring at her and she looks up to see Elena staring at her and Ava gives Elena a blank stare because she knows Caroline's watching. Ava then watches Elena walk up to her and says, "Do you still care about Katherine?" Ava says, "Don't do this, please, don't turn this into something that it's not." Elena says, "So, this isn't up for discussion. That's what you're saying?" Ava says, "No, I'm saying that that this isn't up for discussion right now because we have ears on us." Elena looks over to see Damon and Caroline and she looks back at Ava and sighs, "Okay. When?" Ava says, "I don't know." Elena says, "I saw her, Ava. It's like we're the same person. How could you hate her and be in love with me?" Ava says, "You're reaching. I'm not Damon." Elena says, "Ho-how about we don't bring Damon into this right now?" Ava says, "You know, I can't... I can't do this anymore, Elena." Elena says, "Fine... Ava. Whatever." Elena walks away and Ava gets back to work. Later, Ava sees Damon talking to Mason and then she walks up to Damon after she watches Mason leave. Ava says, "Please tell me... that you were just bonding." Damon says, "So, what's up with this, um... faux drama in your relationship?" Ava says, "What are you talking about?" Damon says, "Oh, come on, Avangeline. You and Elena don't fight. Especially not over me." Ava says, "Drop it, Damon." Damon says, "With pleasure." A teen girl says, "Would you like some lemonade?" Damon grabs the cup and says, "Thank you, sweetie." Damon drinks the lemonade, and he coughs and spits the lemonade out and Ava looks at Damon worriedly and she says, "Hey, what's wrong?" Damon groans, "Vervain." Ava grabs a water bottle and gives it to Damon and he gargles the water and spits it out. Damon angrily says, "I'm gonna kill him." Ava puts her hands on Damon's chest stopping him and she says, "No. Hey. Listen to me." Damon says, "No more Mr. Nice Guy!" Ava pushes Damon on the bench and she says, "Would you just wait a second?" Damon angrily says, "I'm not listening to any more of your give-peace-a-chance crap. He's dead." Ava says, "Okay. I don't like it, but he's making threats. He could expose us. We need to put him down." Damon says, "Alright. Let's do it." Ava then let's go of Damon and Damon looks over to see Mason and says, "Woods. Trash duty. Come on." The Salvatore siblings follow after Mason, and they corner him in the woods. Damon says, "Don't look so surprised. You knew this was inevitable. Go head. Run. I'll give you a head start." Ava then hears a gunshot, and she sees a bullet go through Damon as she looks over to see who shot him, she gets shot in the chest and then again and she and Damon fall to the ground. Later, Ava wakes up and the first thing she sees is Elena and she looks over to see Damon draining the body of a deputy and she looks over to see Sheriff Forbes in trans like state. Damon goes over to Ava and says, "You need to think some deputy blood." Ava says, "Oh, no. I'll be fine. I'm just gonna take a little bit longer. Ah..." Ava winces and Caroline says, "No, Damon's right, you know. If there's ever a time to break your diet--" Elena cuts Caroline off by saying, "She said she didn't want it... okay?" Damon stands up and says, "This is a most unfortunate situation. Two deputies dead. And you. What am I going to do with you?" Caroline looks at her mom and says, "You won't tell anyone, will you? Mom? Mom? Please, I... Look, I know that we don't get along and that you hate me, but I'm your daughter and you'll do this for me, right? Mom, please. He will kill you." Sheriff Forbes says, "Then kill me." Caroline says, "No!" Sheriff Forbes has tears rolling down her cheeks and says, "I can't take this. Kill me, now." Damon walks up to Liz and says, "But you were going to drag it out so painfully." As Damon grabs Liz, Caroline screams, "No! No, no, no, no!" Ava says, "Damon, don't!" Elena says, "Damon, please!" Damon looks back at everyone and says, "Relax, guys. No one's killing anybody." Damon looks at Liz and says, "You're my friend. We got to clean this up." Later, Damon brings Liz to house and brings Liz into the basement so that they can dry the vervain out of her system. Elena and Caroline walk into the house and Ava walks up them and softly says, "Hey." Caroline softly says, "Hey. Get some bunny in you?" Ava says, "Yeah. I'm feeling much better, thank you." As they walk to the basement, they hear Liz say, "Keep Caroline away from me, please. I don't want to see her." Damon says, "She's your daughter, Liz." Liz says, "Not anymore. My daughter's gone." Damon says, "You have no idea how wrong you are about that." Caroline drops her mom's bag and she walks away with Elena after her. As Ava goes to follow after them, she pauses and she looks over at the freezer filled with blood and she walks over to it and she opens it up and grabs a bag tempted to drink it when Elena comes and says, "Ava, I think that we should... What are you doing?" Ava says, "Katherine took a little vervain every day and built up a tolerance to it. I could do the same with blood. I could learn to control myself on it." Elena says, "But you can't. Ava, you don't have to." Ava looks at Elena and says, "I almost died tonight, Elena... because I was too weak." Elena says, "But the last time that you drank human blood--" Ava cuts Elena off and says, "I told you I'd find a way to stop Katherine, didn't I? Well, this is it, this is the only way because she's stronger than me. And unless that changes, I can't protect you." Elena sighs and says, "Can we talk about this later?" Elena signals that Damon could be listening as Ava says, "He can hear us wherever we are because he drinks this. This is the only thing that can help me." Elena says, "Are-are you serious? Or are you pretending to fight? Because I-I-I can't tell if--" Ava cuts Elena off and says, "No, this is real. No more pretend." Elena walks away and Ava sighs. Later, Ava's sitting on her bed when she hears footsteps and she says, "You can come in." Elena opens the door to Ava's room and she says, "Do you really think that you can control it?" Ava softly says, "I don't know. But if I don't try..." Elena says, "So, a little bit every day?" Ava nods and says, "Yeah, just a few drops of blood in my system. I think it's worth trying." Elena says, "So, do I. But I don't want you to do it alone." Elena grabs a letter opener off of Ava's desk and Ava says, "What are you doing?" Elena gasps when she cuts herself with the small knife and she says, "It's you and me, Ava. Always." Elena sits next to Ava and has her hand out towards Ava and then Ava tastes Elena's blood and she feels her eyes change and then Elena brings Ava in for a kiss and Ava feels her eyes change back and Ava pulls Elena back in for a kiss thinking that everything might be okay.
