Chapter 9: Katerina

Ava walks up to Elena who walked into the house, and she says, "Hey." Elena says, "What is this about?" Ava looks to Rose, and Elena follows Ava's gaze to see Rose as she says, "You." Rose does a small wave. Everyone moves to the living room and Rose says, "Okay, you have to understand I only know what I've picked up over the years. And I-I don't know what's true and what's not true. That's the problem with all this vampire crap. But Klaus, I know is real." Elena says, "Who is he?" Damon says, "He's one of the originals. He's a legend." Ava says, "He's one of the first generation of vampires." Elena says, "Like Elijah." Rose says, "No. Elijah was the Easter Bunny compared to Klaus. He's a foot solider. Klaus is the real deal." Ava says, "Klaus is known to be the oldest." Elena says, "Okay, so you're saying that the oldest vampire in the history of time is coming after me?" Rose smiles and says, "Yes." Ava says, "No." Damon says, "What they're saying is... If what she's saying is true." Rose says, "Which it is." Damon says, "And you're not just saying it so we don't kill you." Rose says, "Which I'm not." Damon says, "Then we're looking at a solid maybe." Ava says, "Look, Elijah's dead, right? So, no one else even knows that you exist." Rose says, "Not that you know of." Damon says, "That's not helping." Ava says, "Look, I've never even met anyone who's laid eyes on him. I mean, we're talking centuries of truth mixed with fiction. I mean, we don't know what's real. For all we know, he could just be some sort of stupid bedtime story." Rose says, "He's real, and he doesn't give up. If he wants something, he gets it. If you're not afraid of Klaus, then you're an idiot." Damon says, "Alright, we're shaking. You've made your point." Elena stands up and starts walking away. Ava looks at Elena and says, "Where are you going?" Elena says, "Uh, school. I'm late." Ava stands up and says, "Let me grab my stuff. I'll go with you." Elena says, "That's okay. I know where it is." Ava nods and Elena walks away. Damon says, "She's in denial." Ava looks at Damon and says, "Shut up, Damon." Damon rolls his eyes. Later, Ava's leaving school when she hears a familiar voice say, "Ava! Hey." Ava turns to see Caroline. Caroline smiles and says, "Hey. Um, I need to talk to you. Where are you going?" Ava says, "Um, well, Elena went home sick. I just want to go check up on her." Caroline says, "Ditcher." Ava says, "Hey, I'm kind of worried about her." Caroline says, "You know what? Of course, you are. Go ahead. I... You know, we can talk later." Ava nods and as Caroline's walking away, Ava says, "Uh, what did you want to talk about?" Caroline stops and turns to face Ava and says, "I might have done something." Ava crosses her arms and she says, "What did you do?" Caroline says, "I told Tyler I'm a vampire." Ava sighs. Later, Ava and Caroline are at the Grill, and Caroline's eating a salad, while Ava's eating a burger. Caroline says, "Sorry to drag you here, but if I don't eat I get those killing-some-people urges. Tyler totally has those too, by the way." Ava says, "Yeah, what else did you say to him?" Caroline says, "Not much. I was trying to keep the questions to a minimum. Are you mad?" Ava says, "Yes, Caroline. As a matter of fact, I am a little mad. I mean, if you put yourself at risk. If Damon finds out--" Caroline cuts Ava off and says, "But you're not gonna tell him, are you?" Ava says, "No, of course. He would kill you." Caroline smiles and says, "Always looking out for me." Ava softly smiles and says, "Yeah. Well, you don't exactly make it very easy on me." Caroline says, "Then why do you do it? Why are you such a good friend to me?" Ava says, "You just remind me of someone. My best friend, Lexi." Caroline chuckles and says, "Uh... you have a friend?" Ava says, "You say that with such a... a discouraging amount of surprise, Caroline." Caroline says, "No, I just... Sorry. I just... Tell me about her." Ava says, "I will some other time. I have to go." As Ava's about to get up, Caroline says, "Wait, no. Um... what do we do about Tyler? I-I don't want Damon to kill him 'cause there's a full moon coming up and Tyler's totally freaking out about it." Ava says, "Just be there as a friend for him." Caroline nods and says, "Okay." Ava says, "Okay. Now, I'm leaving." Carolien says, "Wait. Um--" Ava cuts Caroline off and says, "No, no, no. Caroline. You have two seconds to come clean." Caroline says, "What do you mean?" Ava says, "I'd believe the whole innocent act a little bit better if I didn't know how good you were at providing a distraction on demand. Where's Elena?" Caroline sighs and says, "I can't tell you." Ava scoffs and says, "You can't tell me? Are you kidding me?" Carolien says, "I'm sorry, but I... I can't tell you." Ava says, "Caroline, Elena was kidnapped. She could have been killed. And you're seriously not gonna tell me where she is?" Caroline says, "She's not in any danger. I would not have let her put herself in danger." Ava says, "Put herself in danger where? Where is she? Listen, if you're my friend like you've been pretending to be all day then you'll tell me where she is." Caroline says, "Ava... I am your friend but I'm also Elena's friend and I'm sorry... but I'm not going to tell you where she is." Ava scoffs and she gets up and she walks away. Later, Ava goes to the tomb, and she finds Elena there and she says, "Elena." Elena is surprised to see Ava and she says, "Ava. What are you doing here?" Ava says, "I could ask you the same question." Elena sighs and says, "Caroline told you." Ava says, "No, she kept your secret, but it didn't take long for me to figure out what was so important that you'd have to keep it from me." Elena says, "I knew that you'd stop me." Ava says, "Listen to me. Whatever she said to you is a lie. Do not listen to her. She is a liar, Elena." Elena says, "What if she isn't? You didn't hear what she said." Ava says, "You don't have to worry. I'm not gonna let anything happen to you." Elena says, "That's the problem. You won't. But you'll die trying. How is that any better?" Katherine appears and says, "There's nothing you can do, Ava. I haven't even told her the best part of the story. He killed them. My entire family. Just to get back at me for running. Whatever you do to escape Klaus he will get his vengeance. On your friends, your family on anyone that you've ever loved." Ava grabs onto Elena's shoulders and looks at Elena and says, "No. Look at me. No. Do not listen to her, okay?" Katherine says, "Always the protector. But even you must realize that she's doomed. There's nothing you can do to stop it. Unless of course, you have this." Katherine holds up the moonstone and Elena says, "What?" Ava says, "Oh, no, no. There it is. That's the ultimate lie, isn't it? You spun this whole thing so that we would have to get the stone from you, didn't you?" Katherine says, "I didn't spin anything, Ava. It's the truth." Ava says, "No. Let me guess. You wanna trade that stone for your freedom. Hmm? You manipulative, psychotic bitch." Katherine scoffs and says, "My freedom? That's where you're wrong, Ava. I don't want my freedom because when Klaus shows up to kill us all and he will... I'll be in the tomb where no vampire will enter because they can't get out. I'll be the safest psychotic bitch in town." Katherine turns and walks away. Later, Ava walks Elena home and they arrive at her house. Ava says, "Elena." Elena says, "I can't talk about it, Ava." Ava says, "You have to. Don't shut me out. Elena, please." Elena has tears rolling down her cheeks and she says, "I wanted to know the truth, Ava and I got it. It's not just me that's in danger. It-it's Caroline and it's Tyler and it's Bonnie. They're all part of breaking the curse. I can't blame anyone else anymore. Because it's not because you came into town or because you and I fell in love. That's not why everyone that I love is in danger. It's because of me. Everything is because of me." Ava has tears in her eyes, and she pulls Elena in for a hug and Elena sobs into Ava's neck. Ava kisses the top of Elena's head, and she rubs her back as she softly says, "It's not, Elena. None of this is your fault. I promise you."
