━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

ALL MY LIFE, I'VE BEEN USED TO CONFRONTING PROBLEMS HEAD FIRST, TO FINDING SOLUTIONS WITHIN possibilities, but this is one thing that's out of my control. It's difficult to think about the fact that in a few weeks, I will be taking part of terrifying, annual games that take place in an impromptu arena.

I'm not weak, on the contrary, but I do believe this might just be the ultimate challenge that could change me forever. Already, I can't stop thinking about how much I need to win those damned games.

I'll never regret taking Prim's place, though. She's my responsibility, and I have a much bigger chance of winning than she ever will. I mean, maybe, just maybe, I will come back triumphant and proud from the games.

That's unlikely, though. No one ever comes back from the games. Even if they win, specks of their soul are left within the ground of the arena and the immobile heart of the tributes that couldn't make it.

The only thing that calms my nerves is that I know that I will try my best. I won't go down easy.

Right after the end of the anthem, Peeta and I are taken into custody by the masked Peacekeepers. They keep us separated in the large Justice building, in case we get any last visits, before sending us to our death.

This isn't the first time I'm in the building, unluckily. When my father died, they sent the kids whose situation was the same as mine here. They gave me a golden medal they laced around my neck, as if it could repair the damage of my heart.

I remember pinching myself in the arm, leaving a scarlet bruise to blossom, ordering myself not to cry in front of all these strangers. To not give them the satisfaction, to not shift their gaze into pretended pity.

Reality progressively seeps in, awareness paralysing my body and sending chills to cascade down my core. I feel like an animal in headlights, plucked from my usual comfort zone and shocked by the glowing shine of the stars, that decide the outcome of my destiny.

In all my life, I never thought I would be the one to participate in the Hunger Games. It was a concept that seemed distant, and that most people ignored for their sanity. Well, until Reaping day, the most suspenseful and gnawing moment of the year.

The world is a cruel place, and I am going to be given the chance to be able to experience the depths of humanity first hand. Lucky me.

My eyes dart across the room, landing onto an ajar window, calling me to approach it. Beneath, I see the entirety of District Twelve and its many flaws that spread out beneath me. For the first time in my life, there's no where I want to be more than skipping between the lousy market or dodging Peace Keepers.
