if i was going to get a tattoo, i needed company. feeling down and getting a shit ton of needles stabbed into you, who better to ask than tommy.
he agreed, wanting to see me due to him knowing what i was going through. tommy and my dad got on amazingly, him being my best friend from my first day of reception.
my mum gave us a lift to the tattoo shop, my car still in a garage getting fixed. getting out of the car, we walked in and i gave them my name, showing my id.
"nervous, val?" tommy asked, noticing how i bounced my leg.
"very." i laughed nervously, playing with my fingers. "it's worth it though."
"what is it?" he questioned, tilting his head slightly.
"it just says, 'i love you forever' in my dads handwriting." i explained, "since, y'know, he's dead."
dealing with grief was always different for everyone, me personally, i coped with it with both humour and substances. by substances, i'd get high as a kite or drunker than i probably should.
"valerie." tommy held back his laugh. "you can't just say it like that, god."
"valerie, are you ready?" the tattooist asked, before i had time to make a funny comment back to tommy. "i got all the stencil and stuff ready."
"yeah, i think so." i smiled, getting up and walking over to the seat, sitting down as tommy followed. "i might shit myself– sorry, poo myself. is that a problem?"
"that's actually happened." the tattooist laughed. "this woman, er, i was doing her tattoo. and she just said, 'oh no, i've shit'"
"no way." i snorted, "i won't judge, cause that sounds like something i'd do. but i can't see it happening today."
he started on the tattoo and my hand tightened around tommy's who watched intently. "good, it was a lot to clean up. is this your first tattoo?"
"no, no. it's my second, i have one under my ribs but it's just a little red heart."
"this one probably won't be as painful, cause of the placing." he mentioned, it being at the top of my forearm. "i like doing handwriting tattoos, they're one of my favourites."
"i'd love to do tattoos, seems like it would be fun. my uncle is covered in them, it's really cool."
"really? like sleeves and stuff?"
"yeah, he's got both sleeves and most of his chest. he's got my name tattooed because i'm his only niece so i'm special, his words not mine."
he let out a laugh, wiping over the tattoo and continuing. "sleeves are fun to do, they're very time consuming though. especially with colour, getting colour in your first tattoo is brave, so props to you."
we continued random bits of small talk during the tattoo and he soon finished, me paying. he did an amazing job, getting the writing on point. thanking him, tommy and i left and went to a random milkshake shop, getting milkshakes and sitting down to talk about video ideas and random things.
