PresentI sat quietly next to him as he woke up. It took him a while before his eyes landed on me. My leg was shaking and I brought my hand down from my face.
"Why?" I asked and he simply stared at me before looking around at the unfamiliar room. "We are in Russia, this is a safehouse." I answered for him and he seemed to relax a bit.
"Nat" He spoke, his voice hoarse.
"She came in yesterday, took your things and left without a word. She should be coming back any minute now." I answered again and he relaxed more.
"You had a blood transfusion. Natalie and I gave some blood. You'll feel tired but that's about it. Other than that cut on your arm that's stitched up you'll be fine. Don't lift anything, treat that arm like an egg." I stood up.
"You have a few hours to think and when I come back I want answers. I want to know why you never told me how you felt." I swallowed the lump in my throat. If I had known I would have focused on him more. I would've... I would have never let him do this.
"I'm not suicidal." he responded and I wanted to laugh. I motioned to his arm and I saw hesitation.
"I saw the scene at the house. You killed them before you decided to slit your wrist. What else did you expect me to think?" I breathed out shakily. Does he even know how much he means to me? Does he know how much I need him?
"My phone....listen to the audio when Nat gets back."
"I'm already back." Natalie walked in with an older woman. Alicio and her simply stared at each other and I was confused about who she was.
"My baby..." She reached for him and he didn't move. He seemed almost in shock.
"Mom...." His voice broke as a smile came to his lips and they embraced each other.
Mom? I thought she was dead. She... What is going on?
"I thought I would never see you again. I thought he would have ruined you." Her russian accent was thick and I finally understood, she was never dead and he knew it. I leaned away from the wall and turned away.
"Dominic. Thank you. You took care of my son." The woman turned to me and I nodded before walking out of the room. While my best friend was having a family reunion I needed to figure out how to get my sister back since she got kidnapped by the Russians. I looked up at the wooden ceiling that was a tan brown. I sucked in a breath and held it in.
I held it and the world went quiet. It was so silent that when I released the breath and held onto the door frame of another room the sound echoed.
Alicio was supposed to protect my sister. He was supposed.... I was supposed to protect my sister and I failed. I have failed at everything I have ever done including keeping my family from falling apart. Keeping myself from falling apart.
