It was a lovely day and Huckleberry Hound and the gang were all at the park sitting in the grass, trying to relax. They were just gazing up at the clouds, enjoying the sunshine and spending time together, but they had to admit, it was a pretty quiet day. Not a whole lot was going on in Hill Street Neighborhood and they didn't have any new shows to film until the following week.
"Gee, it sure is quiet around here today," Boo-Boo sighed.
"Yeah, like...I wish something a little more exciting would happen," Mr. Jinks admitted.
Huck meanwhile, had decided to sit against his favorite spot, against the old oak tree, and start reading what he thought was going to be a really good book. It was a classic story, so it must have been good, he thought. But it turned out that he was reading a very tragic classic play: Romeo and Juliet. As soon as he got to a really tragic moment, he threw back his head, and burst into tears.
"Huck, what's with all the waterworks?" Jinks asked, covering his ears.
Yogi took at look at the title of the book and nodded. "Well that explains it!" he said. "That's a story that'll make anyone cry! Shee! Even a bear can't walk away with a dry eye!"
"I feel so sorry for the heroes of this story!" Huck wailed. "Poor Romeo...poor Juliet...they loved each other and now they're...BWAAAHHHH!!!"
"I read that book before," Jinks groaned. "Even I couldn't help but cry. But Huck, we're trying to relax, and we can't if you're crying so much."
Huck wiped away his tears. "Shucks, I'm sorry Jinks. But after that, I reckon I need to find a much happier story to read. Maybe one we can all read together. You suppose we could go and find one at the library?"
"Maybe we can find one later today," Boo-Boo replied.
"Yeah, we can all get something to read," Dixie added.
"That sounds like a great idea!" Yogi beamed. "A good quiet day like this makes a great day to look in a very engaging book! Hey-hey-hee!"
Huck nodded. "Yeah. You know, it took a long time for me to learn how to read since I never went to school as a pup."
"You never went to school?" Pixie asked in disbelief.
"That's right," Huck replied. "Well, I did for a few years, but we fell on hard times, and my Ma' and Daddy couldn't afford to send me, or any of my brothers and sisters, so we all dropped out. We had to learn all of these things on our own after that."
"Ahhh, that explains it," Pixie said.
Just a little while later, the friends decided that they were getting a little bored of just sitting in the grass, so they decided to go and make that trip down to the library. But as they were walking, Huck heard a strange noise.
"Chirp, chirp!"
"What was that?" he wondered.
But then he heard the sound again...in fact, they all did.
"Did you guys hear something?" Yogi asked.
They continued to hear the sound from somewhere in the bushes, so they all followed the sound until Huck stopped in front of a large maple tree.
"Uh-oh!" he cried. "Hey fellers! You better come and look at this!"
Everyone rushed over to the tree to see what happened. And there, sitting right under the tree was a tiny baby bluebird.
"Awwwww, it's a little bird!" Dixie sighed.
"But I think he's hurt!" Pixie added.
"It sure looks that way!" Boo-Boo agreed.
