Everybody has a birthday that only comes once a year, like the holidays, including New Year's, Valentine's Day, Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. But today, it was a certain blue hound dog's birthday! You see, Huckleberry Hound was in bed that morning, when his alarm clock rang. He yawned, then got out of bed, and took off his nightcap as he scratched his side and smacked his lips.
"Ahh, good mornin' world," he sighed. "Get up, they say. Time to start another day."
Then he stood in front of the mirror as he put on a clean bow tie, and his favorite straw hat with an orange band around it. Then he passed by the calendar, before he stopped to take a look.
"Lemme see here," he said to himself. "Today's Saturday, January 17th. Ah, okay."
Huck was about to walk away again, but he then stopped and did a take. "JANUARY 17TH!?" he shouted. "That means it's today!! It's my birthday!!" He started to jump around excitedly. "Hooray! Yippee! Hot-diggity and other exuberant-type expressions! I feel as happy as a fly in a tubful of watermelon rinds!!"
Huck ran over to the slide, and slid all the way down to his living room. "Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!" he squealed.
Now it may seem strange to have a slide that takes you downstairs, but Huck's house was built just for him in a very special way, and he loved to slide down a slide! As soon as he reached his living room, he ran to the kitchen, got the ice cream from the freezer, and went to work making himself a birthday sundae for breakfast. He added lots of hot fudge, whipped cream, chopped peanuts and sprinkles, and of course, he didn't forget the cherry on top!
"Well, it's my birthday, so that means I can eat whatever I want for breakfast today!" he said to himself. Then he started eating his sundae. "Mmmmm-mmmmm!" he beamed. "This is scrumptious!"
After breakfast he went to the bathroom to brush his teeth, then he made sure his fur was nicely combed. Then he went outside to find something to do. And as he walked into town, he began to sing a happy tune.
"Sing, keep your spirits high
Sing, pass the worry by
Sing, till the day you die
It's good for ya
Sing, while your debts are made
Sing, till the bills are paid
Sing, don't you be afraidIt's good for ya
When old gloom come around
You don't have to frown
It will mean a thing, just
Boopy-Doopy-Doopy-Doo!
Boop-oop-a-Doop!
Sing, make the day seem right
Sing, so you'd be alright
Sing, and with all your might
It's good for ya!"
He continued to sing when he saw his friends all huddled up near the malt shop.
"What's going on?" he wondered. Then he walked over to ask his friends what they were doing.
"Hi, fellers!" he greeted. "What's up?"
"Look out you guys!" Dixie cried. "It's Huck!"
The gang yelped in fright, then turned to look at Huck.
"Uh, h-h-howdy, Huck!" Mr. Jinks said nervously. "N-n-nice day today isn't it?"
"Beautiful!" Yogi Bear added, nodding with a sheepish grin on his face.
