"Good morning ladies." I smiled as I walked through the office. It wasn't a huge place. 7 of us in total, me sitting right under Erica, the CEO. "What's wrong?"
"5 calls."
"Hm?" I looked at Shelby
"5 calls from Robbie." I rolled my eyes.
"If he calls again tell him to read the note again." I smiled, not stopping walking. They knew the name of Robin and Bailey. The only people allowed to call work. "Anything else?"
"No that's it."
"Thanks Shel!" I turned the corner, walking into Erica's office. "Woah. What is going on here?"
She looked up at me from the chaos on her desk.
"You're late."
"I know. Someone didn't get his arse out of bed and had me waiting for 45 minutes and then greeted me with a 'morning' as I was fucking leaving." I sat down, flicking through the paper work on her desk. "New clients?"
"Yes." She sighed, resting her head in her hands. "Like we're not over run as it is."
"Ah. Well. I have just the solution to that."
"Lil. If you suggest hiring again. I swear to god. I don't have the time to interview and train someone. This client wants it all done in 3 weeks."
"Do you remember Harry? The intern from last summer? Changing careers, went back to uni."
"The cute brunette with the glasses."
"That's him." I chuckled rolling my eyes. "He's doing freelance but it's not going great. I just ran into him on the tube. I told him to come in at 2 and we will see what we can do."
"Oh god, he'd be exactly what we need." I held my hands out like I'd just cured her of all her ailments. "Get him on board. Start him ASAP. I want him on this client like yesterday." I chuckled. I pulled my phone out, taking it off airplane mode and flicking it to silent. Letting all the missed calls, texts and voicemails flood in. It was popping like crazy on the table as we both watched it.
"Would you believe I put it on airplane mode 20 minutes ago."
"All that in 20 minutes?" We stood up, leaving my phone there on the desk as I grabbed my laptop and paperwork from my bag.
"Yep. All because he was late." I stood back up, tugging my shirt down a little from where it had risen up.
"You still in love with him?"
"Someone said on their live last night that we looked cute together and he replied with 'Never going to happen' whilst laughing. Like proper laughing, like it was a fucking joke." I sighed. She was the one person who knew who I was friends with. Probably the only person I'd consider a friend outside of the guys.
"What a shitty thing to do." I nodded, holding everything tight to my chest. "What did the guys say?"
"Nothing. Bails just looked over at me and I shook my head. I went to bed at like 10 just staring into space."
"Why didn't you come over, I'd have gotten wine drunk with you."
"Oh yeah next time let me just 'See yah guys, I'm off to get wine drunk with my boss because I'm in love with my best friend who has a girlfriend and is well out of my league." I laughed anxiously. "No, it's fine. I'll get over it. He just needs to grovel a little for this morning. I can't say anything about last night. He's said shit like that before anyway. He's right. It's never going to happen. I just need to get over it." We walked back into the office, talking in the doorway as Shelby came back to us.
"They're sat down in the meeting room, Erica. I'm going to get them some drinks in do you need anything?"
"A coffee please Shel. I'm dying."
"Iced?"
"Always Iced." I smiled. "Anymore calls?"
"Yes, I told him what you said and he told me to tell you 2 things, answer your phone please and he's coming for 12.30 so take a lunch break."
"Hm." Erica tapped her chin. "I'm sure I needed to speak to you about something. We have a very important meeting from 12 until 2 and then you have Harry coming." I chuckled, shaking my head. "Shel, can you call him back and just say she's got meetings and will be occupied for the rest of the day, potentially working late too." Shel smirked. I freaking loved this team. We had each other's backs no matter what. Didn't mind covering for each other if we had to. It wasn't a strict 9-5 either, nor did you need to be in office 5 days a week, just so long as we knew where you were and what was getting done. I trusted everyone here and they were all hard workers.
"Sure can. I'll call him now and go get coffees. Won't be too long." She winked and sat back down at her desk, leaving us to go to the client meeting.
These kind of things are usually really fun but today, I was almost falling asleep at the table. This client was so boring. They'd be an easy finish that's for sure. Didn't need any in depth work doing. Not really. That's the only reason we were still working on this discovery thing with them.
It went well, them taking the contract to finally get it signed. Only a short 2 week project. That's all we needed but we had said we couldn't start it until next month which they were fine with thankfully. I'll put Harry on that too. He's capable. He proved that with the pieces he did last year.
I looked at my watch as the clients left, 12.37.
"I'm starving." Erica nodded, chewing on her pen as I laughed. "Lunch?"
"Lunch."
"I'm gonna go grab my phone. Need anything from the office?" She shook her head. I walked down, picking my phone up and checking it as I slowly walked back to her.
26 missed calls, 10 voicemails, 40 texts. Fucking hell. I showed her and she raised her eyebrows, shaking her head as we walked towards the lift. She read through them with me as we did. Both of us completely astonished at the numerous texts just filled with question marks.
"Ugh. He says he's here." The lift doors opened and I pushed my phone into my pocket, noticing him sat in the lobby like he always did. Sunglasses on, trying to go by unnoticed. "Honestly." He walked over and Erica chuckled.
"I'll be outside. Don't be long I'm going to pass out." I chuckled and she took off, leaving me with him.
"You've been impossible to reach today."
"I've been busy. I was almost an hour late so I had to fit everything into 20 minutes before a meeting that I just got out of."
"Lil. I'm sorry I-"
"Don't even bother finding an excuse. I don't care." He ran his hand through the front of his hair. "I have a lunch meeting. I need to go."
"It's just with Erica. She can wait. What's wrong with you today?"
"Nothing I'm fine."
"Well obviously you're not."
"I am."
"Are you mad at me for sleeping in?"
"I'm not mad." I shook my head, taking a few steps away from him. "I'm disappointed."
"Ugh. Lil."
"See you whenever Carter." I turned and walked out. Now he knew I was pissed at him. I never last named him unless I was sick of his shit.
"I'll pick you up." His voice echoed through the lobby.
"No you won't."
"I'll wait here all day."
"Then I won't come back."
"Lilly-" I let the door close behind me, walking away with Erica before he got the chance to even finish his sentence. Surely his girlfriend was waiting for her call. He couldn't wait here for me all day. She'd go mad if the attention wasn't on her.
