Max waved goodbye, apart from Kerry who just scoffed and rolled her eyes. I turned the corner to be greeted by mum at the door, with a bright smile.
"Hello my lovely! How was it meeting Kerry for the first time? Is she nice?"
A little lie couldn't do much harm could it? "Yeah she's nice." I struggled a half smile.
"Well that's good to hear! Brittney and camilla are inside."
"Ugh!" I entered the house to see Brittney faking a smug smile, peaking from the stairs with my new top on.
"Is that my top?"
"Oh no. Trust me. It really isn't. The last time I came to your house, I saw that you had this top and I loved it so much, my mum bought it for me! It's amazing isn't it?"
"Yeah it is." I could sense Brittney's rivalry.
I stormed upstairs as I slammed the door shut, Brittney following behind.
"What did I do."
"Simply nothing Brittney! That's the problem."
"So Indigo can we use some of your makeup?" Brittney questioned blinking.
"No Brittney!" I flopped onto my bed.
"Well I'm telling my mum you slapped me around the face!"
I rolled my eyes and sighed- Brittney emptied my makeup bag on the bed.
"So who's first? Can I do yours? Please Indigo!"
I sighed and replied, "alright, alright!"
She took a makeup brush and dabbed it carefully in the rose coloured blush.
"Not too much Brittney." I warned.
"Ugh, your Mum doesn't have to see Indigo!"
"No it's just last time you came around you made me look like a clown and don't argue back; you did it deliberately." I rolled my eyes and sighed.
Brittney smirked as she added some pale pink eyeshadow- I put my own mascara on, not wanting Brittney to poke me in the eye.
Five minutes later I was looking in a mirror admiring my reflection, surprisingly pleased with my makeup.
"So, you like it?" Brittney eagerly questioned.
"I love it Brittney. Thanks!"
Brittney smiled while an awkward moment of silence passed by.
"Brittney can I ask you something?" I asked, breaking the silence.
"Yeah, sure. Go ahead."
"Why are you so annoying and why do we constantly have a rivalry against each other and feel like everything is a competition?"
"I don't know I suppose I'm just jealous of how smart you are and this is just between me and you Indigo, but I don't want to end up like my Mum, who's after boyfriend's all the time and told me when I was little that I was a mistake. Mum had me when she was sixteen and said it wasn't a planned pregnancy. I get told all the time at school that my mum is a hoe. It's hard hearing that you know. To bad she didn't get an abortion because I'm here now aren't I?" Tears started forming in Brittney's eyes.
"Brittney, why didn't you tell me? And just know that I'm always here for you at school. Who says that about your Mum?"
"I was scared Indigo because your Mum and Dad loved each other and were married and happy. My Mum had a one night stand with a random guy who I don't even know. Even my Mum doesn't remember my own Dad. It's Just this girl I hang out with who say those things about my Mum. Wait I'm sorry for bringing up your Dad." Brittney reassured me, placing her hand on my shoulder.
"No, it's fine. My Mum said it's good if I talk about Dad more. Come on, give me a hug Brittney. You're making me cry" I began to cry. Happy that we were forming a friendship, sad for Brittney and upset about Dad. So many emotions all at once.
"Indigo, wipe those tears away. Don't feel sorry for me. Now come on let's go downstairs for lunch. I don't think my mum wants to see us having a mental breakdown, does she?" Brittney walked over to the vanity mirror fixing up her foundation covered face. Brittney was always tarted up, no matter where she was.
"Okay." I sniffled wiping the tears away with my cardigan sleeve and struggled a half smile.
We walked down the stairs to see our mums chatting away- sipping their coffee every now and then.
"Oh hello troublemakers! What have you been up to?" My mum gave a polite smile.
"We've been doing makeup Aunt Rose." Brittney began to perk up forgetting about the heartfelt conversation upstairs.
"We've got some sandwiches and cupcakes on the table for you girls. Here take as much as you like. They need eating." Camilla held out a plate in front of me and Brittney, "I'm on a diet. It's so tempting you know, me sat right in front of it." She chuckled shooing us away.
"Why don't you take it up stairs girls and have a picnic in your bedroom? There's sausage rolls on the counter top too. Oh and try not to get any food on the carpet girls!" My mum smiled.
Me and Brittney exchanged glances and smirked as I ran into the kitchen grabbing the sausage rolls. Brittney ran ahead up the stairs.
A little while later when me and Brittney were happily eating, Brittney's mum called from downstairs, "Britt, I'm going to the shops to get some food for dinner tonight. You want to come with me or are you staying here?"
I tapped Brittney on the shoulder as if to say 'stay'.
"I'll stay mum. Who wants to spend their Saturday going to the supermarket?" Brittney smirked at me as she called to her mum.
"Well someone has to get the food. Oh, and don't be a bother for Aunt Rose and please get along with Indigo. Just this once." A few mutters came from downstairs as the door shut and echoes of the word 'bye' swirled around the house.
"So how's that boyfriend of yours? The one who lives next door." Brittney raised her eyebrows and smirked.
"Oh shut up," I giggled throwing a cushion at Brittney. "He's not my boyfriend. Actually he has a girlfriend, I met her today and what an idiot she is!"
"Oh I'm sorry. I thought you had a crush on him for a while. Also spill the tea! I want to know all the gossip!"
"Well, I maybe have a tiny crush on him. I just don't want to say anything because first of all he's in a relationship and second of all I don't want to ruin our friendship. His girlfriend is called Kerry. She's just perfect, but that gob of hers isn't so PERFECT!" I sighed.
"You do know you can breathe after every sentence Indigo?" Brittney placed her hand on my shoulder.
We both sighed in unison; I took another bite from my sandwich. Brittney on the other hand had already ate two sandwiches (cheese and tuna) and a sausage roll. She was now peeling the wrapper off her cupcake.
"You must have been hungry Brittney?" I giggled.
