All eyes fell on Wednesday Addams and Xavier Thorpe as the striking couple walked into Nevermore Academy's ballroom.

Amidst the many stares, questions were shouted and cameras flashed as members of the press who had attended the event sought to learn more about the pair.

Both Wednesday and Xavier failed to realize the curious attention they received had not been due to their professional accomplishments.

Although Xavier and Wednesday weren't together, their body language said the opposite.

Wednesday boldly faced the crowd with her signature scowl, yet her possessive grasp on Xavier's arm seemed to betray her subconscious sentiments.

Simultaneously, he kept his shoulders as straight as any alpha who looked after his mate would have.

It seemed as if Xavier intended to protect Wednesday from the many strangers' tactless instructions.

They hadn't quite made it to their seats when the ambush occurred.

An overzealous journalist jumped directly in front of the couple with a blinding burst of light from her wide-angle lense while she shouted at Xavier, "Xavier!.....Xavier Thorpe! Is this your girlfriend?! Are you dat-"

Wednesday's scowl deepened as the reporter rudely ignored her and spoke only to Xavier.

"-I'm single, this is just my friend, Wednesday." He hurriedly corrected the journalist with an irritated nod before he pulled his darling safely out of the reporter's path.

Wednesday often made grim statements and sinister jokes about enjoying pain.

Her determination to live her belief that emotion was a sign of weakness made it sting all the more, somehow.

Xavier may as well have slit her soft skin with the edge of a sharp knife, it caused her a comparable amount of suffering to hear him say those awful words out loud.

This is just my friend, Wednesday.

The couple joined Enid and Ajax at their assigned table once they escaped the rabid media's onslaught.

Xavier silently sat in the seat next to Wednesday while Nevermore Academy's Black Hearts, Bright Minds Awards Ceremony finally began.

Principal Weems introduced each nominee and gave a brief description of their magnificent accomplishments before they joined her at the front of the room and received their award, which was a small, stone statue carved into the shape of a perched raven.

As the night wore on and the awards were handed out, cycles of polite, silent observation were interrupted by rounds of expected applause.

Wednesday found the entire affair tedious.

Xavier thought it was wonderful, not the ceremony itself, but the excuse it gave him to be near his darling.

Every time Wednesday leaned close to him, he could smell the bittersweet scent of her scorched rose shampoo.

If an alpha noticed anything, it was the scent of the one he.......admired.

After yet another rousing round of claps, Principal Weems approached the microphone at the front of the room once more and spoke, "Our next recipient hardly needs any summary. Joining us tonight is Mr. Xavier Thorpe himself, renowned artist and son of celebrity seer, Vincent Thorpe!"
