McKenzie Bolhofner- German/Scotch-Irish ancestry; McKenzie Bolhofner is a charming and sociable young woman who attends the high school and is successful and popular both with the students and the faculty. With a GPA of 3.3, she is seen as an average student but still gets by when it comes to her studies and numerous extracurricular activities. Her diverse goals included possibly being a content creator, as well as attending Indiana University Bloomington to live the quintessential college experience. She is considered to be kindhearted and well-meaning and seems to be able to make friends easily, being a great communicator and seeming polite to those around her. McKenzie is goofy, quite extroverted and slightly self-conscious, while her brother Nash sometimes prefers to observe the world around him over actively participating in it. She makes a genuine effort to show kindness to all of the students on campus however and is shown to be a clear, deductive thinker. She is smart and sneaky, but also practical, reasonable, and mature for her age in some aspects, especially compared to her best friend Zoey Meyer-Noceda. She is also brave, placing herself in harm's way to protect those she cares about, and has great affection and interest in photography, always taking pictures of her surroundings. McKenzie is a very open and friendly person and is often depicted by her classmates as being caring and compassionate to a fault. She always tries to be loyal to her friends, even when it is hard to do so, and she often puts their needs before her own and has even been shown to try and help anyone in need. She is quick to correct herself in the end and and is usually the first willing to apologize for her mistakes, causing her to frequently be found mediating people's disputes. She loves the spotlight and has the ability to rally others to join her cause, being defined not only by her faith in herself, but her strong faith in her friends.

McKenzie is considered to be "fast" by her peers however, up to the point where there are mixed opinions about her personality. She is generally perceived as popular and kind, but also quite rebellious, as she has partied a lot and is a drinker, in addition to having an interest in the punk-rock scene and listening to the Velvet Pistols. She fondly calls her boyfriend Adam Ghiberti a "hell-raiser" due to his sharing her music taste and style, while he refers to her as his "angel". Her close friend Vivian describes her as a "fiend on her own", which implies that she was an alcoholic due to the influences she surrounded herself with. According to her parents, McKenzie is also very bright and has an eye for images and art, just like her aunt Lela did throughout her youth. Considering her school performance and the effort she put into becoming a digital storyteller, she is perceived as a very ambitious person. She seems to have a positive personality, as she is often well-loved by those close to her and always appears to be surrounded by a large group of people. She likes the "Moto Boho" aesthetic and is seen as being slightly more girly and idealistic than Vivian is, reflected by her love of L'Oréal and continuous desire to start her own makeup line. When she left for Indiana, McKenzie's friends had a going-away party for her, and they confused her with an identical girl named Kennedy. She has similarly demonstrated that she is among the more confrontational of the girls on campus, both when it is and isn't necessary. She is followed around a lot by different men, as she is considered to be very pretty and attractive, although she tends to dislike the unwanted attention. She also has a habit of leaving voice note essays and sending blank photos of a forehead, wall, or ceiling just to keep a text conversation alive without typing words. McKenzie is a teenager who has long bleached blonde hair that reaches her bra strap, bluish-gray eyes, thin lips and an aquiline nose, as well as a fair skin tone and a rectangular body shape.

She avoids open-toe shoes and recalls being rejected by a group of girls as a middle schooler due to their considering her tall height of 6 ft. 0 in. to be unappealing. She befriended Zoey shortly after when the two sat next to each other in class and eventually became her best friend, with the two of them spending time at each other's houses after school. Nash especially has an affinity for old analog cameras and instant camera selfies and likes obscure cult movies and anime, while her father is a business mogul with a career in international law. McKenzie has also gotten a fake ID and prefers to interact with older people, as she believes they understand her more and that she can be at ease. She deals with fear by inhaling for four seconds, holding her breath for seven seconds, and exhaling for eight seconds, which she calls "four-seven-eight breathing". She generally tends to refer to her older brother as "bro" and once came to school with super short hair in the eighth grade to try out a new "look". Her parents think that she's always "aggressive" with the toilet paper roll, because they saw her brother unravel the roll and assumed she did it. McKenzie has always dreamed of traveling and exploring the world, as well as going on "adventures" together with her boyfriend once she finally moves out. She has worn a slip dress over jeans and considers silver to be her go to color for eyeshadow, as it makes her grayish-blue eyes pop out and contrasts well with her fair complexion. She is a very smart, yet playful individual who can be dramatic and looks at life through a different lens, being described as healthy and full of energy, as well as athletic. She is regarded as flirty, clumsy, and imaginative and loves to participate in a wide variety of sports, such as cheerleading and soccer, and she later gets into motor-cross and skateboarding. McKenzie's friends help her stay organized and grounded, and they often refer to her as being "sweet, but tough", with a side to her that shows some controlling tendencies.

In spite of this, she remains a headstrong and blunt person overall and tends to be very realistic and vocal about her opinions. She still manages to put together looks that are unique and and manages to make a big statement by just being who she is. She takes the mother-role of the friend group and treats them as an extended family due to ease her fears of something going wrong. McKenzie has a digital wallet and can often be seen with her gadgets, most notably her IPhone, and she is referred to by her parents as a "phoneaholic teenager" who never uses periods. She likes to spend quality time with her boyfriend Adam, who works part-time at Chipotle and sometimes considers him the only real thing she has in life, trusting him with her past secrets. Her favorite place is The Fruit Bowl, which is between Burpin' Burger and Flip's Food and Fuel, and she works part-time at Amores Pizza to have spending money when she goes out with friends. She is also good at listening to others and can be highly empathetic to people and their struggles, often being the one who has heart-to-hearts with those she cares about. McKenzie can still be arrogant and sometimes possesses a bit of a mean streak, as she is used to getting things to flow her in her direction and work in her favor. She is described by her less popular classmate Shelby Doherty as "the type of person who will play both sides of an issue to get what they want, but at the end of the day, will look out for number one." She demands strict loyalty from those closest to her and isn't particularly averse to seeking revenge against those whom have betrayed her trust, proving to be extremely vindictive when provoked. As a person with highly rigid values, she doesn't take kindly to dishonesty, despite her own deceitful nature, although Vivian sometimes serves as her moral compass. McKenzie is a girl with a clear vision of her future and who she wants to become, yet the arrival of her cousins from Omaha, Nebraska when she was 13 challenged this vision, causing her to become withdrawn and slightly anti-social.

Despite her initial resistance, her natural craftiness and resourcefulness came to the fore as she retreated to her newfound attic hideout while seeking solace and isolation. Realizing that she missed the companionship and vibrancy of her cousins, she made a conscious effort to engage more with them in the end. In doing so, she discovered that her presence and actions inadvertently helped them step out of their comfort zones and embrace their true selves. McKenzie is adamantly against Donald Trump and tends to hold a more liberal perspective on social situations overall, although she still identifies as center-left. She and Nash are only a year apart and grew up feeling essentially like twins, since they have birthdays in April that are within a week of each others. As he grew older however and felt pressured by his traditionalist mother, who is a journalist into marrying a woman and adhering to the "nuclear family dynamic", he became more distant. His sister admits that she is his very best friend and probably the first person in the family he would confide something to, yet notices he appears avoidant and increasingly distracted by texts during a visit from college. After a brief pregnancy scare at age 19, McKenzie experiences some setbacks in life when she finds herself less likely to conceive children due to her struggles with pelvic inflammatory disease. This fact brings significant disillusionment to her, seeing as she knows her parents could possibly never have biological grandchildren of their own with McKenzie's older brother Nash being gay. She nevertheless transitions back to her natural dusty blonde hair color and evolves into a deeper thinker after she takes a trip to Bali. She also becomes aware of more global issues, such as the Ebola outbreak and goes on to adopt a few children of her own while remaining happily committed to her longtime romantic partner Adam.
