Chancey Hale- Spanish (mother); English/Scotch-Irish, with distant Cherokee ancestry (father); Chancey Hale is a young sophomore girl at the high school who is often depicted as being intelligent, timid, overworked, and shy. She is a huge bookworm and is shown to be very smart, as some of her fellow students tend to message her whenever they want to look for help. She is considered to be above average in terms of her looks, yet her main insecurity revolves around feeling second-best to others. She spent little time socializing with other people when she was younger and used to be scared and apprehensive about speaking to groups. Chancey loves animals dearly and prefers their company over people's, yet it is revealed in her diary that she is good friends with Emma Ngo. She states that Emma was willing to give her a chance, as she feels that girls who are "different" are typically discriminated against. She suffers from an auditory processing disorder, a neurological deficit she developed from birth that makes it difficult for her to understand instructions that are given to her orally. She is also quite enthusiastic whenever it comes to reviewing or cataloging books and is a huge fan of soft, crackling lo-fi beats. Chancey is a wholehearted and pretty-in-personality kind of person who is optimistic, positive, kind-hearted, although she is naïve. She is aware of her flaws and embraces them and loves her friends, whom she considers the most important people in the world to her. She is a nice girl but can sometimes struggle with her quirks, although she can always find a new perspective on them in the end. She can also be a bit self-conscious and react too quickly, such as instantly labeling Wendy Nowak as rude and accusing one of her friends of being the "Ghostly Gossip".
Chancey is patient and considerate for the most part and often gives leeway to Stirling, despite the harm it does her because she is aware that his home situation is far from ideal. She is not happy with the situation, but she knows that she would also be unhappy without him, despite her parents not wanting him around due to him being working-class and her coming from a privileged background. She says that he tends to be rather easy to provoke but due to his good nature, he has the capacity to be much stronger deep down than he may appear to be at first. She knows that he does not sugarcoat his message or allow anyone to walk over him, and the one exception to his no-nonsense attitude is his lifelong friend Craig Seibold. Chancey is also an environmentalist, as trash and pollution in the ocean anger her, and she shows sympathy for many aquatic elements, including fish, frogs, and all water creatures. She loves helping water creatures and wishes for the ocean to be clean, and one of her earliest accomplishments was being in the Key Club. She grew up going to a luxury vacation home located off the coast of Maine, dreaming of seeing the world and having an active social life. She is very close with her great uncles, who are a married gay couple, and holds a great deal of respect for them as the heads of a Wildlife Sanctuary. When Chancey is not studying, she is most likely to be found engaging in linocut block printing, and she mentions that her uncle does macro nature photography. As a vegan, she usually arranges her own food mostly from her vegetable garden and tends to get weak at the mere sight of blood.
She is clumsy but has a really big heart, and she mentions that Stirling loves playing video games, writing and drawing, and hanging out with friends. He is often seen crashing in with a skateboard and is generally perceived by those around him as being curious, clever, and geeky. Chancey loves to read and is always excited to learn something new, and part of her condition is her hypersensitivity to sound, causing her to wear noise-canceling headphones. As a child, she liked to do everything by herself, such as eating lunch and reading the Chronicles of Narnia, yet she grew to be loyal, kind and always ready to do the right thing. Fair and down-to-earth, she likes that Stirling is almost always about serious talking but is also very sarcastic and is the one in the group to be most likely to drop dry of dark humor since he too is playful, in a strange stoic way. He is quite capable of making new friendships and bonds with other people easily, but only when he is totally comfortable with it. Chancey is also very close with her mother and has a special connection with her, being the most emotionally attached to her between herself and her older half-sister. She is always willing to help her out and will often accompany her to Walmart or the local grocery store in order to run errands together. Because her father was often away while she was growing up doing business trips around the world, the two have somewhat of a distant relationship, yet she is respectful and polite to him. He often likes to take her and her sister to the golf course, and he mentions that his best friend owns a country club that is located in La Quinta, California. Chancey is also on good terms with Craig, Stirling's best friend, although the two were initially at odds due to his apathetic demeanor.
They frequently bond whenever they go to the movies with Stirling, although Craig complained about feeling like a "third wheel" at first. She and Emma become best friends sometime during their sophomore year of high school and go to Acadia National Park together that summer. The two have inside jokes that they share with each other and like to talk about conspiracy theories in her room when they get together. Chancey admits that she struggles with being more brutally honest, as she sometimes fails to rearrange her speech to suit situations. Regardless, her boyfriend retains a lot of energy and is almost always in a hurry about the things he is passionate about, occasionally using terms like 'ASAP' to demand speed. She finds what her teachers and fellow students do to the world intolerable and hates that she rarely sees others trying to save it. Since nature is her home, she will go to great lengths to try and save it and encourages other people to do small things like sort trash and tend to the school's flora. Friendly, creative, and with a great sensibility to the arts, Chancey is always willing to lend a hand and wise words to her friends. Her family is the most important thing to her, and she loves making them and her ancestors from Málaga, Spain proud, with her favorite celebration being El Día de Los Fieles Difuntos. She has a small orange pet kitten named Orangina whom she is very affectionate with and often plays with in her free time, and she considers her favorite food to be gazpacho. She doesn't watch much television and instead prefers to watch YouTube clips, although admits that she is a big fan of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Chancey is a petite brunette who has long, straight brown hair that is usually parted on one side, brown eyes, and a light skin tone, and she stands at 5 ft 0 1/2 in tall.
She usually wears casual attire and prefers to wear jeans and t-shirts to dresses, as well as the simple look when it comes to her makeup. She is considered to be baby-faced by many of her peers and is always said to look slightly younger than she truly is. Her mother is regarded as a great swimmer and keeps herself toned by practicing the sport, being a former member of her school's varsity team. Stirling transfers to a private school with the help of a scholarship, wanting to be challenged more academically, although he continues to date Chancey steadily throughout the years. She falls in love with him, and the two become engaged by the time she is in her final year of college, during which he becomes an architectural designer. They take a trip to Glasgow, Scotland that is cut short when she is suddenly offered a full-time job working as an animal behaviorist, although they make plans to finish the remainder of their vacation a few years later. Her mother in the meantime earns a few online certifications and becomes a medical assistant, working part-time as the check-out person at a mental health clinic. Chancey's family expresses disapproval of her marriage at first, but ultimately come to accept it when they realize how devoted she is to her husband. They go on to have a young daughter who is born in late June and also have a new pet kitten in their residence by her late 20s. She moves to a Tudor-style house with her family and has become self-employed by the time she is middle-aged, working from home. Her mother starts a nonprofit organization that helps ensure adoptions for childless couples and is shown to have long, wavy hair that is fully white during her old age. INFP 6w5
