Liam Benjamin Quigley- Irish-American ancestry; Liam is a smart and well-balanced young man whom is attending Cornell University on a full ride scholarship as he studies medicine. The college-aged older brother of Hannah Quigley, he is a perceptive individual who can be very demonstrative and frank and is noted by Hannah to not do anything without a reason. He tends to project his need for stability onto his environment, often undertaking the roles of a peacemaker and finding satisfaction in being there for his loved ones. He generally has an acute awareness of the emotions and desires of the people surrounding him. Liam can be both patient and impatient at times depending on the situation he is faced with, particularly when it comes to teaching something new or trying to counsel someone through a difficult time. He is a germaphobe and "fashion-atic" who is slightly obsessed with his looks, priding himself constantly on being the "easy one" of the two children in his family. While the seven-year age difference between himself and his younger sister has made their bond somewhat distant, he still tries to subtly show his affection for his younger sister. He does so through small acts such as purchasing educational self-help books for his younger sibling to read to help her through her social struggles and offering a listening ear when she has a serious dilemma. Liam's father made plain that he didn't want him basing his final decision on their family situation and told him that if he opted for Cornell, he should live in the dorm and he'd buy him a used car. He realizes that his son can handle the great changes in life well and accept setbacks calmly, which causes most people to depend on him in times of crisis. It can be rather difficult for him to control his temper however, especially when someone tries to take away his hidden snacks.
He chooses not to pry into other people's private affairs unless it is necessary, although his brotherly affection for Hannah makes him keenly aware when she is having problems or needs guidance. Liam is a caring, considerate person who despite his respect for personal space, is known to help or lecture people with their individual problems if the situation requires him to do so. He has a no-nonsense yet aloof personality and can be a bit snobby at times, and he is shown to be irritated by most of Hannah's actions. He tends to pick on her, as seen when Hannah got finished cleaning up the bathroom and Liam pushed her out of the way claiming he had to get ready for work. He values the importance of homework over what Hannah personally likes, but nevertheless shows a softer side towards his younger sister at certain points. Liam is also very imaginative and can be quite crafty, being able to make a chair out of a cardboard box, although he remains grounded in reality when it is necessary for his or his friends' safety. Although he has great expectations for himself and the people he encounters, he will occasionally loosen up and engage with others in a casual way. He is usually not the type to hold grudges, expressing empathy and understanding, as well as genuine concern for Hannah during her emotional outbursts regarding the "favoritism" she falsely perceives between her father and older brother. His academic persona and social grace often make him the source of Hannah's envy, as unlike her brother, she tends to procrastinate excessively on her schoolwork and have little confidence in her intellectual abilities. Liam tends to be better at managing his money and has diligently accumulated his savings into his piggy bank from a young age. As a baby and a toddler, he had a fascination with building impressive structures, mostly out of blocks and playing cards. Despite his youth, he is shown to be incredibly smart, acting as both a philosopher and theologian, often quoting the Bible.
He begins to wear glasses, but by the end of that year, his ophthalmologist had told him that he does not have to wear them all the time. When they were playing cars, Hannah would always pick the firetruck no matter what and has gotten into arguments with Liam over who got to play with the firetruck that time. She became frustrated by her "monkey brother" and his perfectionism, which led her to sabotage his middle school report card and change his grade to an A- out of impulse. She likewise appears somewhat oblivious to things and often gets taken advantage of due to her kindness, which causes him to frequently come to her defense against her tormentors. He nonetheless acknowledges his sister's hidden potential and admits that she could potentially rival him in his intelligence should she put more effort into her studies. Having always served as a mentor-like figure to Hannah, Liam considers himself to be good with kids and has a strong parental instinct, making him eager to have children of his own someday. He tends to be quietly observant of his classmates and likes to people watch, frequently recording his perceptions in notebooks while checking on them regularly during school activities or at night. Hannah once joked with Mia that he thinks he is a genius simply because he is older and has referred to him "Germy" and "Pieface" when he told her a period was "a comma without a tail". She nevertheless looks up to her brother and begins to see him as sophisticated and grown-up, feeling fascinated by his social life and his experiences in college. Liam was perpetually infuriated by the childhood antics of his younger sister, who frequently exhibited quirks such as drinking from milk cartons rather than bottles. She also insisted on pretending to be a supervillain named Professor Chaos and watching a "boring" children's show about an anthropomorphic aardvark named Arthur.
