Dixie urged her horse to go faster, bullets whizzing past her as she retaliated, shooting back at the bandits. West Dickens' carriage careened wildly ahead of her, making it difficult for her to fend off the attackers.
However, the toll of sleepless nights and insufficient food was catching up to her. She swayed in her saddle, desperately gripping the reins to avoid falling. Despite her efforts, black dots clouded her vision, and she eventually tumbled from the saddle. West Dickens, too, was shot shortly after her fall, his carriage coming to a stop not far ahead. He managed to drag himself off the seat and attempted to flee, but his escape was short-lived as he collapsed behind the carriage, not far from Dixie.
It wasn't until the following day that someone stumbled upon the scene. John halted his horse, recognizing the name on the side of the carriage and recalling what Eli had told him. Dismounting, he cautiously approached the carriage and noticed a portly man lying on the ground. However, his attention was immediately drawn to a woman with black hair, streaked with gray, her face covered in desert dust. A horse stood protectively over her, shielding her from the sun.
"Hey! Madam! Are you alright?" John called out, rushing over to the woman who remained unresponsive. He gently moved her head, brushing aside her tangled hair to inspect her face. The sight left him speechless, his mind struggling to comprehend what he was seeing, she is breath taking. Shaking his head to clear his thoughts, he said, "Hey! It's time to wake up, madam," lightly tapping her cheek. Still receiving no response, he felt a wave of relief as he noticed her chest rising and falling. Then, he heard a groan.
His attention shifted to the man lying nearby.
"Excuse me? Excuse me, sir, you need help?" He questioned the man standing to near him "Mister, you alive?" He asked coming closed
"Bugger fuck! Goddammit! God heaven!" The man yelled and John was already preferring the company of the unconscious woman
John crouched down a little before speaking "Excuse me?"
"I said, no, I'm not okay. Do I look like I'm okay?" The old man said
"You look pretty good for a corpse" John replied with a chuckle thinking of leaving the man
"Praise be." The man said with a small cough
"Move up, mister."John said standing to his height "time to get you to a doctor, or an undertaker, whichever you need once we get to town"
"St. Peter, open up them pearly gates...I'm coming home." The man said raising his arms to the sky
John couldn't help but laugh as he reached to help them up
"Come on, mister. Come on" he told him while struggling to lift the man who cried out in as he sat up and more as John forced him to his feet
"Hurry, sir. I'm bleeding like a badly butchered hog." The man over exaggerated
"You'll be fine. Just focus" John told him before he ran over to the woman
