The Abyss

"The abyss. The stars, the great void above. Through his [Lawless'] story he almost makes it seem like the sky itself is the true enemy of all life on Sanctum, or in Sanctum."

- Alizarin Crymson in Crimson Assassin, "The Fallen King"

The Abyss refers to everything that ever exists or existed. It is the name for the universe, wicked and evil, black as eternal night where no life were to exist and anything that tried failed. That is, until the arrival of the gods and the creation of Sanctum.

There is no start nor end to the Abyss and no one knows where its inhabitants came from. When the gods arrived in First Age 1, the Zodiac appeared behind them as if they were waiting. The Zodiac had one goal, to serve the will of the Abyss and wipe out all life in the darkness that was, and will persist to eternity.

Celestial Bodies

Three main entities were known to exist within the Abyss after the coming of the gods, with twelve smaller entities surrounding them. The sun, Aerinor, existed in the center with two planets, Sanctum and Algol, orbiting it on opposite sides in equal distance. From one planet it was impossible to see the other. Around this system hung twelve constellations, one for each of the Zodiac.

Aerinor

Aerinor was the star of Sanctum that gave it light, and before the shattering of the Vitanien Crystal in F.A. 10,000, the gifts of the gods. Here dwelt the gods in a realm where no mortal dared, or could, enter. Instead of fire and flame within Aerinor there was only golden light all around, and it was oddly room temperature with puffy white clouds at every altitude. Aerinor was not the first home of the gods, as they came from somewhere before, but no one remembers those days.

The houses of the gods within Aerinor, also known as Aethirion, was an infinite set of floors, each spreading out infinitely as well. Though there was an endless number of floors, there was a top, and that is was the High Chamber where the ruling goddess Keyvis lived. The Halls of Measure were somewhere not far below the top and was the meeting place of the gods to decide the fates of Sanctum. Eristar and Arcadia lived on this level.

One of the most important levels was known as the Looking Glass level, and it was entirely made out of glass and mirrors. The Looking Glass was located in the center tier of Aethirion and was the conduit that linked Aerinor with Sanctum. It was here that one could watch life on Sanctum by simply looking anywhere, as everything was glass. This floor was destroyed in F.A. 10,000 when the Vitanien Crystal on Sanctum was broken.

In Fi.A. 1,530, Sapphira Renoir resurrects the Vitanien Crystal and takes it to Aerinor. Here she slays the gods and topples Aethirion, vanishing the light from the Abyss along with the darkness.

Sanctum

Sanctum was the creation of the gods for humanity and life to exist within the abyss. It was a planet very similar to Earth and peaceful, that is until its connection with the gods was severed in F.A. 10,000. Sanctum was since then plagued with the deepening grasp of Abyss, pulling it into the darkness year after year even if humanities victories seemed great. The Abyss would always return stronger than before and with a greater will to see life wither. The Abyss was banished from Sanctum in Fi.A. 1,530 and the planet was created inside a stable universe much like ours in reality, existing on into eternity with no sway from light or darkness.

Algol

In F.A. 10,000, the Abyss created another planet in the likeness of Sanctum, and it appeared identical except everything was withered and a dark cloud blocked all light to its surface. It was called Algol, or Anti-Sanctum. Here the creatures of shadow multiplied and sought to destroy the gods and Sanctum. In T.A. 1, the gods attack attacked Algol and shattered a piece of it off into the Abyss. In a matter of years inhabitants of Sanctum saw the debris and learned of the planet's existence. Algol was most likely destroyed along with the darkness by Sapphira Renoir at the end of the Fifth Age.

Constellations
There are a total of twelve constellations in the sky surrounding Aerinor. Each represents a Zodiac sign and are the doorway to their realms. If you were to travel towards a constellation it is said it would take centuries to reach it, but the Zodiac can travel freely between realms and transport others there as well.

Most realms remain a mystery to the people of Sanctum, but some info has been gathered by the Zodiac themselves, the ones who would willingly give it up.

Leo's realm is supposedly endless dark mountains with peaks of fire. If mortals were to walk here they would be in constant agony and headache.

Pisces's realm consists entirely out of water and their palace lies at the bottommost frozen depths. Colossal horrors lurk beneath the dark tides and the water is chilling to the bone.

Capricorn's realm is an endless forest with trees of infinite height. There is no sound in this forest, the only noise being of your body. You cannot hear the creatures coming.
