So do you guys remember back in chapter "Watermark 👍" I briefly lost my mind over a giant sea snail called the Syrinx Aruanus?  I have a couple of updates.

First of all I managed to figure out what this thing eats, which is (from what I gathered) mostly a small species of feather duster worm.

Secondly I had to gather that the snail would probably rely on camouflage as it's main defence tactic.  This is purely speculation on my end but I wanna suggest that the snail's shell is porous, which can cause detritus to build up, making it the perfect breeding ground for algae (hair algae in particular).  This is not an evolutionary trait exclusive to the Syrinx Aruanus so it's not super out of left field to suggest such a thing :P

I have a feeling that the reason these snails are so obscure is because of over hunting.  Large snail shells are valuable in the shell market trade and most large sea shells you'll find in the market belonged to living animals that were killed specifically for their shell.

A lot of large marine snail species are endangered because of this practice, including the giant triton (which you my know my character triton is based off of)

BUT WAIT, THERE'S ART!

Followers of my work art will know that I have a story where I turn ocean animals into people.  I have a lot of lore in this story and when trying to choose a "snail king" (lol) I went with the giant triton snail.  Mostly because of its environmental importance, but also because it's the second largest marine snail in the world.  Syrinx Aruanus, in being the only species of snail that was larger than the triton, I felt as though they couldn't be left out of the work.

I wanted to play into their aloof nature by making her sort of a "hidden" character within the story.  But basically she is Triton's mother figure.  Out somewhere in the middle of nowhere Triton would be raised by this mysterious lady snail who no one but him as ever seen.

I don't normally write rationals like this for my characters and artwork like this but I found this snail weirdly interesting and I wanted to share lol.

Here is a little drawing a did of a tiny child Triton and his mother, "Lady Trumpet", that I wanted to draw, cuz I think it's cute :P

Drawing Triton without his beard feels a bit weird ngl but reasonably he wouldn't have had it as a child
╮( ̄▽ ̄"")╭

Sometimes I hate explaining things about my comic because I'm viscerally aware that I'm the only one who finds this sort of stuff cool lol.  Hopefully when I am able to make my comic I'll manage to convince other people through the comic that fish are cool too
