We didn't immediately find out what went on at the Headmaster's office because Harry did not come back anytime soon. But when he did return to the common room, we found out that he wasn't expelled but something even worse had happened.
Dumbledore took the blame for forming Dumbledore's Army while in the presence of Aurors and the Minister himself who had been called by Umbridge. But he didn't let himself get arrested and escaped with the help of Fawkes the phoenix.
With an arrest warrant out for Dumbledore and him no longer holding the position of the Headmaster, guess who became the new contender for that rank?
Everyone's worst nightmare; Dolores Insane Umbridge.
Technically, Professor McGonagall should have been promoted to headmistress as she already holds the rank of being the Deputy in terms of her seniority and experience combined. But no, the Minister has a fudge cake for a brain (quite literally) and that was how Umbridge got the rank she had set her eyes on ever since she joined the school.
"Hey Kat, aren't you worried that she's headmistress now?" Angelina spoke up, shaking me out of my thoughts.
I hadn't had the heart to go back to the prefects common room all by myself so I was still in the Gryffindor common room while a hour was left until curfew.
Everyone of us seemed to be in a lockdown mode, hiding away in our common rooms because only God knows what havoc the Umbitch would unleash.
"Why should I be worried?" I asked but soon enough realized the answer.
The last time when Umbridge had Crucio-ed me, I had taunted her that she could do nothing more than that because she wasn't the headmistress.
Now that she had become the headmistress, she had enough authority to expel me or remove me from the position of Head Girl. And I would expect nothing less from her.
Katie noticed the look on my face as she spoke, "exactly our point."
But we were interrupted as the twins came to join us and it seemed that they had overheard our conversation.
"That is exactly what we've been telling you for days, Kat," Fred added, "let's go with our plan instead of getting expelled."
"What plan?" Angelina looked at them in alarm because of course she knew the extents these two could go to.
"Nothing," George spoke up, managing a very innocent look on his face which Fred too mimed right on the spot, "just a little science experiment."
I shook my head at that remark. Ever since I told them about science, these two have been using it as a cover up for every single thing they plot. And surprisingly, it works for them very well too.
They might not know anything scientific but it serves as a good excuse for them to wriggle out of any conversation.
So whenever they are up to anything suspicious, they usually reply with the statement that they are just carrying out a harmless science experiment. Which obviously is not as harmless as they might verbally imply.
Fred nudged my arm, "come on, don't be so worried. It's fool proof."
"And fail proof," George piped up as well.
"You two are definitely up to something," Angelina and Katie narrowed their eyes.
Well, time to come for a much needed rescue.
"No, they are not," I had to cover for them because no matter what, they are still my brothers and I can't let their brilliant plan get whiffed out by the Umbitch, "as for you two, Fred and George, I am not worried about Umbridge. I'm going to stay here and carry out my duties as Head Girl either until she removes me from my post or expels me."
"Remarkable determination but our offer still stands. Two days on with the toad as headmistress and you too will be begging for an escape," the twins remarked before leaving for their dorms.
The things is, my lovely brothers have been planning to leave Hogwarts ever since they found out that Umbridge got made headmistress after Dumbledore. I'm sure they have had a bunch of brilliant ideas by now but we can't discuss anything without getting overheard.
Plus no matter how brilliant the idea is, I can't leave Hogwarts just yet. The NEWTs exams are right round the corner and I can't threaten my career like that by leaving at the last minute.
Mum would be very disappointed in me and I surely don't want that to happen.
On the other hand, if our Headmistress Umbitch does end up kicking me out, that would be an entirely different case altogether.
The clock struck the curfew hour, indicating that I had to leave for my prefect rounds too. Ron and Hermione had left already so I bid goodnight to my friends and left the common room.
There was no one in the vast corridors as I checked every spot scheduled to me for the last rounds. After making sure that every student was safely in the dorms and no mischief was going on outside, I too decided to go to my own dorm.
No wonder all these rounds made me even more tired and I felt I would sleep like a log the second my head would hit the pillow.
But seemed like luck was never in my favor.
I had just taken the turn to the flights of stairs that led up to the Head perfects' common room when a very unmistakable yet equally unpleasant sound caught me off guard.
"Hem, hem."
Oh dear no...
Anything but the pink toad...
Much to my disappointment, when I turned around, it was indeed Dolores Umbridge standing behind me with her sickly sweet smile and disgusting pink outfit.
"Miss Weasley, a word?"
No thank you very much. I pretended not to hear her but of course, that couldn't work for long.
"Please follow me to my office."
I tried to resist, "but Professor, it's past curfew and I was taking the prefect rounds..."
"Headmistress," she corrected me with a smug grin, "it's Headmistress Umbridge from now onwards so please address me as such. As for the rounds, I'm sure following the Headmistress' orders are considered on much more priority. I won't repeat this for you, Miss Weasley. My office. Now."
Guess I have got to prepare myself for another Cruciatus curse or spending the whole night in her dreadful pink cabin writing lines.
Right then I did not have any other option except to follow her order so rather unwillingly, I turned to go to her office behind her.
However, just as we were leaving, I caught sight of Davies who was also returning from his rounds. Of course I couldn't say anything to him verbally or else Umbridge would hear as she was not far off. But when he rose an eyebrow as if to ask me whether everything was okay or not, I mouthed: Get me out of this situation.
I didn't know whether he understood or not but he blinked once and dipped his head in the slightest of nods. Then he continued up the stairs to the common room because he couldn't afford to let Umbridge get suspicious that I had conveyed something to him in that brief moment.
I really hope he comes up with something that gets me out of Umbridge's office quick or I'm sure the last of my control would evaporate and I could end up setting her table on fire.
