With Umbridge as headmistress, staying at Hogwarts was becoming a nightmare not only for the students but also for the rest of the teachers. Her inspections had become even crueler and she was all in all an unavoidable terror for all of us.
The OWLs and the NEWTs exams were approaching so we had to focus on our studies as well but with such a big issue at hand, all we could focus on was praying to get released from her torture.
I heard from Ron that she had barged into the Career Advice lessons that Professor McGonagall had arranged for fifth year students and the two women got into an argument when Umbridge stated Harry could never become an Auror. At that Professor McGonagall had firmly stated that even if she had to give Harry extra lessons and look after his education herself, she would do that if it helped him achieve his dream of becoming an Auror.
That was honestly so sweet of her.
I love Professor McGonagall for always taking a stand against Umbridge and putting her in her place.
That morning even before it was time for breakfast, I heard a knock on my dorm door. Slipping on my cardigan as it was chilly, I went to open the door, expecting to see Roger.
However, I was surprised to see the twins instead and Roger standing at a distance.
"Hi," both of them waved, "Davies let us in with thanks. We had to talk."
"Oh... Okay," but then I recalled it was the day they were planning to execute their marvelous escapade. Seeing the realization on my face, their grins widened, confirming that they indeed had to talk about it.
"Hey, can we please use the common room?" I asked Roger as I led the twins out because my dorm wasn't big enough for three people.
"Sure, I was going back to bed anyway, it's an hour until breakfast," he replied, walking back to his side of the dorm.
"No mate, step out. It's confidential," George piped up.
"George, it's fine. It's only Roger and he's going to bed. We don't have to kick him out," I remarked but then I realized why they were looking at me so pointedly.
It was not that they were worried he would eavesdrop on us and expose the plan because I could very easily use a Muffliato and block out our voices from reaching him. But they were more surprised by the fact that I called him by his first name.
Should have seen that coming...
"Kat, didn't you hate this dude?" Fred asked, looking at me very suspiciously.
I put up the muffling charm and craned my neck to see that Roger had indeed gone back to his dorm so he wouldn't be able to hear us. "Yeah, but we sorted things out."
"So just sorted things out or is there anything going on that we must know...?"
I seriously did not like how the conversation was going, it was quite embarrassing, "oh shut up, it's nothing like that."
"Yeah, it's only Roger," they teased, wiggling their eyebrows as if hinting at something, "but really, what are we gonna tell Sirius about this?"
"Guys, stop it," I was quite sure my face would have gotten flushed from embarrassment, "there is nothing between me and Roger or me and Sirius. Understand?"
"Really? We thought you were playing a game of guessing which one is the lie out of these two. I put my money on Roger."
"Me too. Because you can't possibly convince us that there's nothing between you and Sirius."
"Stop it!" I warned, knowing that if I said anything about Sirius, they would take it the wrong way, "and you two shouldn't even be here at this hour so be grateful I haven't kicked you out. Either you tell me what you came here for or I will have to unwillingly deduct points off my own house due to you guys."
They exchanged a glance and rolled their eyes, "you're no fun, Kat. You're becoming like Bighead Percy."
"And don't even mention Percy..."
It's been a long time since I even heard from him but that's probably because I did not reply to his last letter and he would have thought I didn't want to talk to him anymore.
It seems like I always have to sort things out with Percce and then get into a rift all over again for the misery cycle to repeat.
Seeing my slightly sad expression, they changed the topic. "Anyways, we had come here to tell you that there is a slight change of plans."
"Okay, what's the plan now?"
"Harry wants to talk to Sirius and Profess- I mean Lupin," Fred explained, "but the fireplaces are being monitored so he can't use the common room fireplace like he did earlier."
"So we offered him that he could use Umbridge's fireplace while we distract her today with our top secret plan," George resumed and both of them winked at that making a smile crease my lips as well, "because we are sure she would not have her own fireplace monitored. This way, two birds can be killed with one stone."
"We'll get to escape, Umbridge will be distracted and Harry can talk to his uncles at ease," Fred concluded.
Okay, the plan is not bad so far.
"And what do you guys want me to do?" I asked though I had told them beforehand that if they asked me to help with something major, I wouldn't be able to do it because it would get me expelled.
"Oh, nothing that serious. You just have to make sure none of the teachers go up to the Headmisstress' office while Harry's in there. Though we are sure no one would want to go up in that cat hole either way unless it's Filch."
Yikes, that was not a picture I had to have in my head right then. Having a vivid imagination does suck sometimes.
"Alright, I will do it."
With everything decided, I lifted off the muffling charm and told the twins to go back to their common rooms before Umbridge came dawdling over to cause more trouble. I closed the portrait after they had left and then checked the clock.
It would soon be time for breakfast so I didn't go back to bed instead I decided to go and take a shower.
Umbridge was in for a huge surprise and I couldn't wait to see the look on her face after Fred and George would have pulled the most massive prank in the history of Hogwarts.
And I was not wrong.
Breakfast passed as usual and we all went to our classes as decided. The fifth-year students were taking their OWLs exam when Fred and George staged a distraction so that they would get caught intentionally.
Things went according to plan as Umbridge came after them and they set off the exploding fireworks in the corridors.
The next few minutes were pure chaos.
Fred and George had summoned their brooms and they whizzed past Umbridge who was being chased by the fireworks taking the form of a colossal dragon. She was yelling that they would get expelled for that but of course, my brothers had already decided to leave.
A live-action firework display was going on and all the students had gathered to watch.
At last, the twins escaped through the main gate of the castle taking off into the sky after a huge W shot up the clouds.
I knew they used the entire stock of fireworks they had made till then for their joke shop.
But it was indeed well worth it.
The look on Umbridge's face was unforgettable and I had never felt so satisfied to see someone that angry.
"Miss Weasley!" She shrieked as she came to the school grounds where all the students had been cheering the escape of the Weasley twins, "Miss Weasley, I need to see you in my office!"
Oh, dear...
I had a fair idea she was going to pin the escapade on me.
"Right now!"
Well, she couldn't let the fun last, could she? But picturing her face in a mix of anger, shock, and confusion on the firework dragon sent a slight smile upon my lips.
So I decided to get it done and stepped out from the crowds of students. Her eyes locked with mine furiously as she turned to go to her office, intending for me to follow.
