it's nice to have a friend"

THIS BOOK IS A PREQUEL TO JUST LIKE A MOVIE AND HAPPINESS IS A BUTTERFLY

The first day of summer break meant no school.

The first day of summer break meant hanging out at the Meeks-Martin household.

The first day of summer break meant our annual movie day-movie night sleepover.

Tara and I walked up to the front door together, my mom being the one who dropped us off at Mindy and Chad's.

Tara started knocking rapidly on their door the moment we were close enough to reach it, and I could hear muffled voices and scuffling footsteps around the house until the door swung open.

Instead of one of the twins, Wes Hicks stood there. His dark brown hair was sitting flat on his head, and his blue eyes seemed to sparkle as he smiled at us.

"Tara, Y/N, hey guys." He grinned. Chad appeared in the doorway beside him.

"Welcome, ladies." Chad slung his arm over Wes' shoulder and pushed his cheek against his best friend's. "Mindy's setting up movies."

"Because what else would she be doing?" Tara spoke playfully.

"Amber's in the theater with her." Chad continued.

"So we're the last ones?" I stepped into the house after Tara, and Chad nodded.

"As per usual." He shrugged. "It's not even a surprise at this point."

"Oh, shut up, Chad." Tara laughed as the two of them walked further into the house.

"What's Mindy picking this time?" I asked Wes and he shrugged.

"No clue."

"Do you at least know the genre?" I questioned as we started following the others. "Because I'm starting to get bored of the amount of slashers she makes us watch."

Wes laughed and shook his head.

"No, I, uh... I don't know."

"Hopefully it's a rom-com." I joked as we stepped into the theatre. I glanced at the tv and what else would I see but the DVD home screen of Get Out. "Yet we're watching another horror."

"Hey, it's not a slasher though." Wes shrugged and we both took seats on the lounge in the room. "Does she get points for that?"

"I suppose."

Tara and Amber sat close at one end on the armchairs, probably Amber's idea, then the twins were taking up half of the main couch between the two of them, so Wes and I sat on the other half, taking up much less space.

Meeting eyes with Tara across the room, she wiggled her eyebrows and nodded at Wes.

Something I had learned from Tara, maybe a year or two earlier, was that Wes Hicks had a crush on me.

He didn't necessarily at this point in time.

He had asked me out back we were 14, and I said no. I just didn't like him like that. He was one of my best friends, and had been since kindergarten, I didn't want to lose that.

Tara was convinced that he still liked me, but I wasn't sure.

He never mentioned it again, or even gave any indication that he did. Not towards me anyway.
